Images from Alaska on Holland America's 7-day Alaska Explorer. First section covers from Port of Seattle to the open ocean, Puget Sound through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. After all you go to get to your cruise destination, get onboard and get settled, it's such a relief to finally get to your room, and start to settle in. I was incredibly lucky with the weather and the resulting views of Mt Rainer. On top of that, an air show was in progress, so there was an additional level of entertainment while waiting to sail!
I always enjoy seeing what other ships are in port, as often they are on similar or overlapping itineraries, and you tend to keep running into them. I was really surprised the first time I realized that there was an armed Coast Guard escort for cruise ships. This time there were two, very close in.
But finally, the time comes when it's lines off and the engines crank up and the sail away party begins!
This was the first cruise I've ever been on where land was in site most of the trip. So glad I had upgraded to a balcony at the last minute. Especially since I later found out the ship was booked up, and that was the only way I really had any privacy. Really took advantage of free room service on this trip.
Anyway, the voyage through the Sounds and Straits was an adventure in itself. The shoreline was intriguing, with massive mountains nearly always in the distance. Lots of other kinds of watercraft, birds that were new to me, and a whole series of lighthouses kept me out on the deck with my camera for hours. Even had a glimpse of dolphins, though they merely swirled around at the surface and never really jumped out.
By about the time we reached the ocean, the mist was rolling in, the light was fading, and it was time to retreat to my room to watch the sunset. That bed looked really appealing after the long day. And kind of glad the next one was cruising only.... along the entire length of Vancouver Island.
