Neil is one of the most underrated, underappreciated artists of our time.

Neil Young is one of the first artists that drew my attention to race relations in America. Born in ‘63; it has been a long road. I thought things were going well until the fascist republicans came along. Neil is just as critical today as he was back in the ‘70’ and 80’s.

I've never understood how some folks hear a song and instantly choose to take offense instead of LISTENING and feeling. As with all music, it is meant to make you feel something and if you choose to feel offended over feeling empathy than your "world revolves around me" attitude is stopping you from great growth.
Obviously, anyone who knows anything about the world knows racism doesn't just stay within the confines of the Southern US (Boston, anyone?), but I guess he meant to touch on the very real history of public beatings and lynchings of African American men in the South after slavery had ended.
That's not an agenda or pointing blame, it's simply our shared history.

How many singers have had the conscience and the guts of committing themselves both in lyrics and harrowing singing as much as Neil Young in this song?

Treating human beings like garbage is beyond evil. Like dots on the ground they don’t care about.

I heard this song for the first time on the radio year 2003 and had no idea what it was talking about until I had my experience with it, great song though.

Love this song so much. The lyrics in this song are so powerful yet all too true. Neil had the guts and then some to tell it like it was at that point in time. However there was more to this song then just the lyrics the guitar piano and drums in between the lyrics had a fantastic beat to it. Too top it all off after the second verse that electric guitar ripped like thunder in the sky which sounded really awesome as well. Good job Neil love your music

I think "Lily Belle" is a 60's version of "Karen"

Instant fan. I’m looking up his entire catalog!! I used to like “Sweet Home Alabama” tune until I actually read the lyrics and a comment brought me here.

Stereotypical Lyrics that weren’t and aren’t representative of the majority of southern America. Roughly 3% of the population owned slaves but this song would have you believe all southerners participated. Lynyrd Skynard didn’t appreciated being grouped in this stereotyping. Hence…SHA was their retort.

Neil Young never lived in the South. Most people commenting have never lived in the South. I’m born, raised and all ancestry is DEEP SOUTH. My Southern pride is something I can’t explain. This South is my ancestry home. For someone to suggest that I should pay reformations is crazy stupid. Lynyrd Skynyrd band members didn’t inherit from big plantation slave owners. They were poor and not well educated. You would have to be Southern breed to know this truth, not all slave owners were bad and not all slaves were good. It’s something people of Southern Heritage know yet don’t fully understand. There were slaves that love their masters that were good to them. Example Thomas Jefferson was a very complex slave owner he truly loved Sally and she loved him and the offspring of this union do not have bad feelings about this. In the sixties my mothers maid was like a mother to me. I loved her and she loved us and was part of the family. Many slaves would not leave their masters after they were freed. Also many whites picked cotton. It’s not a movie like Roots or Gone with the Wind. Not every thing is black or white!sometimes it’s grayish. My grandfather was born on a plantation in Louisiana his father was a overseer. The Tanner family who owned the plantations in this area were loved by their slaves. One of the Tanner plantation owners was played in the movie 12 years a slave. He was the good master. This is very complex and I don’t expect a outsider to understand. My grandfather who had no money was the kindest loving man. Everyone loved him! Some where there is a German person who’s great grandfather was a Nazi soldier and he was a loving man. I expect to catch hell for my comments but unless Mr. Neil Young lived and his ancestry was from plantation county, he has no right to comment on this time and place. Certainly no Washington D.C. politicians have any wright in saying I should pay reformations. I couldn’t afford it even if I thought I should! I have Southern pride and won’t apologize for it. It’s who I am just like Mr. Neil is Canadian.
