I was given the opportunity of reviewing a pair of Nano Sized PLC Controllers that are completely at home in the world of the "Internet of Things"
With all the hype on the internet and in the media regarding the internet Of Things but not too much to actually deliver on that beyond gimmicks, it is nice to be able to review a pair of industrial controllers that deliver on their promise, provide easy and simple integration to Internet based Smart Devices or Cloud Computing
The Crouzet em4 remote and em4 alert are two PLCs that have integrated cellular data capabilities that will work on as little as a 2G plan with SMS Messaging or in the Case of the em4 remote, comes with the first year of coverage included.
The em4 remote provides the ability to centralize its data Logs, Monitoring and Event occurrences on the internet accessed through a simple and easy to use WEB site provided by Crouzet. You just need to register, provide a few details of your device and you can be up and running in minutes
The em4 alert requires that you secure your own SIM card, Only WAP is required to support SMS messaging and Email features. Once the SIM is installed, a few simple configuration screens in the provided design tools and you’re sending your alerts, status changes and other information to your smart phone which can also be used to adjust settings on the PLC with easy and with simple SMS messages
Outside of the method of communications both units share the same PLC features and can be expanded by adding up to two more modules and are able to talk to other units using industry standard RS485 communications simply by plugging in an adapter and setting up the easy to use software
Basic features include the following
• 26 I/Os Nano-PLC in a compact modular shape
• 24 VDC -15% / +20% power supply
• Highly visible HMI with 4 lines of 18 characters white on a black backlight, 6 x programmable keys
• 4 configurable digital inputs for encoder 20 kHz , or high speed count 60 kHz
• 12 digital/analog inputs including 4 configurable 0-10 V, 0-20, 4-20 mA with high accuracy for sensors
• 2 static PWM outputs allowing controlling analog actuators controlled valve, controlled pump... or for external PWM/0-10 V or 4-20 mA converter
• 8 relay outputs 2 x 6 A, 6 x 8 A
• A large memory for application and remote functions program ~1000 FB
• Programmable locally with a USB interface, or automatic download when provisioning the em4 remote on em4 web
• Optional interface for Modbus RS485 slave

I will be posting some tutorial videos soon showing how easy they are to program and on how to get these up an running for home automation and other interesting projects, there are alot of possibilities that are easily acheived withe these controllers and at the price, there can suite the home as well as commercial and industrial applications
