Best Genres of Photography (And The WORST)

What is the best genre of photography to get into? Street photography? Wildlife? Landscape? Today I rate and roast each genre of loser photography from best to worst. Wedding photography. Does photoshopping your pictures count as real photography or are you fake? Portrait photography but you touch up the skin? BAD.

You missed out my genre - back garden photography. This is popular with people who have too much money and embarrassingly poor photography skills and spend it on expensive cameras but can’t be bothered to leave the house. They pretend they’re just comparing cameras and lenses and will one day definitely pick a proper genre when they’ve found the perfect camera which a friend of mine on YouTube used to search for (I miss those days!). My pro tip is not to use telephoto lenses when practising this skill as your neighbours may get entirely the wrong impression as to what you’re doing (according to someone I know).

I belong to the genre known as the wannabe. I wannabe all those genres of photographer and I watch every YouTube video I can to learn how to do each and every type of photography. And I am spectacularly useless at all of them. But every camera review, every lens review brings new hope - this will make me better at last! You know the saying 'all the gear, no idea'? That’s me and thousands like me, and we all watch your channel and laugh and laugh till we fall asleep and dream of becoming a videographer instead.

I would add to this list Pet photographers. Only genre worst than pet photography could be a Pet Wedding photography.

I pretty much agree with your assessments! You forgot sports photographers who obsess with gazillion frames per second and pay fortunes for the heaviest gear that exists.

You forgot us, the rock-gut of photographers: Real estate photography.

Yeah, your mind must have froze up at the end there when you couldn't think of any more genres. Here are a few. Sports photography, event photography, macro photography, astro photography, environmental photography, journalism photography, pet portrait photography, architecture photography.... that's probably enough for a part 2.

On a roll in this one Kasey 😂 had me cracking up multiple times. And by the looks of these comments, you can do a second installment. Photojournalists, food photographers, macro photographers, etc

Misssed genres: 1. family event photographers, including growing grandchildren, 2. vacation photographers (e.g., 500 pictures of the cruise ship breakfast buffet)

I bet that people used to walk those trails -- to enjoy nature, get away from the concrete and steel, and commune with God -- but now they are frightened of the plaid-hat wearing guy who talks to himself on the trails....

You forgot astrophotographers. I'm on a couple of groups but I can't take it anymore... Every picture is like. "I took this picture at noon of a landscape at 12mm. Then I photoshopped in a night sky image I took 6 years ago at 200mm. It was tracked and stacked. It's basically what the eye sees at night". Bunch of liars. I'd like to hear your opinion on that.

I have a confession to make. I take pictures of trains and can't stop myself. I really tried to stop. I just can't. I am so ashamed...

Street creep here, lol. Street to me the most challenging because you’re not in control of ANYTHING. Not the weather, the people, the lighting, etc. Almost nobody is a model, the timing is always crucial and everything is done on a whim while at the same time being very methodical with where you’re gonna be and why. Shot my first wedding this weekend so I guess that makes me a loner as well. Thanks for the laugh, Kasey. 😂

People who have seen my photos have said I should be a wedding photog. No way. The same applies to portrait photography. Your description of portrait photogs is exactly how I think of them.

Volcano photography. It also suffers from beyond what was actually seen manipulation/editing similar to landscape photography.

There aren't many videos which I'll watch through to the end; just your uploads and car crash vids normally. Always funny. Love it

You left off the best genre of all - FINGERNAIL photography. I've built up a large portfolio of fingernail pics over the years. I've even started incorporating fingernails into other genres too - there's nothing like a beautiful landscape with a fingernail in the upper left corner! True composition! I usually ask people in the park if I can take a pic of their fingernail - some agree, and others say "Get away from me you f_cking freak!"....oh well, just remember it's not only wedding photographers that have it tough!
