A couple months ago the parking area would have been filled. But even then, the wilderness is so vast that you very rarely see anyone on the trail. Now, when we're the only car in the parking lot, the atmosphere is changed. For miles, we're the only ones experiencing the leafless solitude.
As soon as you step out of the car, silence hits you. You can almost hear your heartbeat. Nothing but the echo of a distant raven's call. The sky is grey, cloudless. The lakes are half-frozen. There's no wind to swoosh through the pines or rustle dead brown leaves. It is still. The late autumn forest holds a sense of anticipation for the winter snow. Walking here feels almost intrusive, like showing up late to performance you weren't invited to. The trees watch you as you walk, wondering why you're here.
