As a Greek I want to state my deep respect and appreciation for the australians and new zealanders who fought on isolated mountainous villages against the axis so far from home. Their story is a story that often gets ignored

As an italian I feel very sorry and ashamed by fact that we invaded greek. Italians and greeks are brothers and should never fight each other.

My grandfather lost both his legs fighting the Italians in these battles. Unfortunately these FIRST victorious battles against axis powers in WWII and the repulse of the axis invaders are not widely known by the public. Documentaries and films worldwide focused overwhelmingly on the English and American contribution. And even when it comes to the battle of Crete it is mostly shown like a heroic battle οf the British and Commonwealth forces on the island. Like if the remnants of the Greek army there and especially the heroic people of Crete were just bystanders.

The odds where in favour of Greece from the beggining???? WTF ? Greece had actually no tanks, no modern artillery pieces, a very small airforce and bad supply lines. How on earth Greece from the beggining had the advantage ? Even the Greek goverment expected to lose, dispite what the Greek people believed.
Apart from the the mountainous terrain, Italy had a pure advantage in every sector. The fact that Greece at this stage won against the Italians was something unexpected for everyone.

My grandfather was there, an artillery officer.
That generation of the Greeks was heroic, equal to the generation that fought the Persian empire 2400 years before them.
The Italians is a brother nation and we love them regardless. They were forced to invade Greece, they had no option with the dictator Mussolini, and the Italian people gave him a horrible death but it was justified.
Now Greece has an impressive air force and can win a war even against Turkey.

Every year on the 28th of October, we commemorate the rejection by the Greek prime minister Ioannis Metaxas of the ultimatum made by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on 28 October 1940 and the subsequent Hellenic counterattack against the invading Italian forces at the mountains of Pindus during the Greco-Italian War and Greek resistance during the Axis occupation.

Metaxas allegedly answered with a single laconic word: όχι (No!). However, his actual reply was, “Alors, c’est la guerre!” (Then it is war!).

This legendary nation has always stood at the right side of history, since antiquity. Always guarding Thermopylae, always fighting against the odds.
