I really like this discussion - it can be difficult to put the relationship of all of these variables/movements in to words. I think one of the most critical steps for beginners to grasp is the shifting of weight forward and aft to "lock" or "release" an edge. Correctly positioning weight/pressure around the ski is going to have an impact on what you can get the ski to do (and how much effort you have to exert to do it). In particular, when you are wanting to "lock" in an edge to carve a turn after you've set an edge, you will ease your weight back to apply pressure across the edge and bend the ski. Conversely, when you are ready to release the edge and initiate a new turn you must first ease your weight forward on the ski a bit to release the back half of the ski to allow it to rotate while you transfer the force to the opposite edge. if you don't release this pressure before unlocking the edge - it will be more difficult to unlock the edge and if you manage to do it, you will likely skid out. Once on the new edge the weight can be eased backward again to lock the new edge. Of course this also requires several other operations in regard to edge angle and ski rotation to occur at the same time, but in my opinion it all starts with effective re-balancing of weight over the ski.

Just love smart skiers talking skiing. Just rewatched your 84 win, so awesome. Love to see another video on what ya do during the off season to try and keep ski ready.

I like to think about riding a Mountain Bike on trails in the woods as it relates to skiing. Hands on the handlebars ( they never fall behind or move up and down), your upper body does not rotate, you lean the bike into a turn with the outside leg extended and inside leg up ( shorter) like a ski turn. You look at where you want to go as you pick your line through rocks, roots and trees. Momentum is your friend in getting up and over and through stuff like skiing off piste and powder. Lots of cross over between the two sports. These are just a few examples. Mountain biking gets me in great condition for Backcountry and resort skiing.

Is "edging" with the base the same as "smearing"? I've been hearing "smearing" a lot this season especially when people review new skis.

Oh boy Karina can but I have to admit that she doesn't says "boludeces", she has a lot of common sense and good explanation of skiing techniques!

Deb, for teaching beginners, do you teach wedge christies to transition from the wedge to parallel or just go directly to parallel?

Skiing in 7 words: “ Stand on your feet and TURN THEM!” 😉

Jeanne is absolutely correct, 85% of the skiers don't want to hear all the technical terms and philosophy. Only 16% of people in the world learn by sound, 22% by sight and the rest by physically doing it. I know its a living room and its open talk but Jeanne is correct, they want to enjoy it and survive. Would love to have Jeanne as an instructor she seems like it would be very informative and enjoyable.

Repetition is the key to retention. Technical theory may be boring. Technical theory may take years & decades to merely interpret. Technical theory shall be available for improved performance. Repetition is the key to retention.
