P.S. She said "I mean, it's very difficult to speak in Afrikaans when there's only one person that speaks Afrikaans and no one speaks back, so it's a bit funny."
~ Afrikaner.

When you're Dutch and didn't know Afrikaans descends from Dutch and then you watch this video and understand everything and your mind is blown.

So now that she has moved to the States, does that make her African-American?

I’m so proud of myself right now. I’m German, I don’t speak any Afrikaans or Dutch, but I was in South Africa for half a year. But I’ve been back for 8 months now and I understood everything she said. This probably doesn’t sound very impressive but I’ve never been prouder.

PIers Morgan is even a failure as a flirt. Someone kick him back to Merry Ol' Anglund, please!

In fact Afrikaans is old Dutch. When the Dutch colonists got into war with the British, the dutch empire refused to send reinforcements. The dutch south africans felt betrayed by their countrymen back home, this made them change their identity: Afrikaner instead of Dutchmen and their language Afrikaans instead of Nederlands (Dutch).

It makes me proud that she actually values her language. Us (africans) had major issues with white supremacists but we weren't completely against everything that had to do with euro descendants. I'm Zulu speaking & I can hear every word she's saying as I grew amongst Colored (mixed race) people of South Africa. Afrikaans was basically regarded as the language of Black oppressors but nowadays I text my cousin using the lingo & its fun now that we can communicate with it freely & jokingly!

I'm South African and it's quite funny seeing these comments about Afrikaans.

I think this woman is an inspiration . She shot her abusive, drunken father, to protect her mother . Her mum took the blame to protect her career . Fantastic women both of them .

One of the sexiest women to ever walk the earth no matter what language she's speaking.

Fun fact: "My hand is in warm water" is written exactly the same in Afrikaans.

I'm Norwegian and even I got most of it :P
If you just pay attention Germanic languages are very similar. The grammar is identical and very many words are similar in each of the languages, even English. Many times it's just tone differences. Hearing Charlize speaking it actually first sounded like Swedish, by the tone she spoke in.

Charlize said: "it's very hard to speak in Afrikaans, if there is only one person who speaks Afrikaans, and no one talks back. So it is a bit funny to speak in my language."

(Just in case anyone was wondering - p.s. this is coming from a South African)

Cool, I think South Afrikaans sounds very beautiful! I went to thailand on a trip and met a south african man there. After speaking American for weeks it was so nice for both him and me to be able to talk in our own languages for a while, eventhough we are from such different parts of the world, we could understand each other very well. :) Take care!

I know it's not the same but it sounds very similar to Swedish. My friend is from South Africa and I love it when she speaks Afrikaans, lol! It's such a cool sounding language. I love different languages in general.
