Irish Travellers aren’t gypsies. But there are Romany gypsies in Britain who have been there for over 500 years. The Welsh Romany dialect was compiled into a dictionary in the early 1900s by John Samson. He determined that 60% of the vocabulary was derived from Sanskrit, the ancient language of India. They also borrowed vocabulary from Persian, Greek, English and Welsh. The language is no longer spoken as it was a century ago, just as many Welsh people no longer speak Welsh, and they just speak English. But the Welsh are still Welsh even if they only speak English. There are many young Native Americans who don’t speak the language of their ancestors either. That doesn’t mean they aren’t Native American now. The Welsh gypsies were never a large population like Roma from the Balkans, so there has been intermarriage with non-Gypsies. If they hadn’t done that, they’d all end up marrying their close relatives. They’re quite an inbred population as it is.

The romanichal and welsh kale are Romani the same as this man. He is just using examples from balkans Roma. Not all Roma are dark and even this guy is clearly mixed with Europeans.

I'm half gypsy, i'm white, green/blue eyes, brown hair and i can't speak gypsy because i grew up in a Swedish household but i still see myself as gypsy and i'm trying to connect more to my gypsy side

My father is Romanichal Gpysy. I was his first born son and he wasn't around all my life so I never got to learn the language or the culture. I'm 27 years old, and it pisses me off that I may never get to pass down that knowledge to my future children.

Our family here in NZ has Zincali heritage. Some of us have black hair and dark skin and some of us have blonde hair and lighter skin.

My father is Boyash (Machvaja) born in Serbia, I was brought up in the UK. So I know what you mean by "real gypsies". But you are wrong there are none in the UK...Romanichal are our cousins & they speak similar vocabulary, but with English grammar & accents, & follow customs. They have been in the UK for 500 years. You will still meet some with darker colouring & Indian features, but you've seen English weather., anyone would go pale after 500 years: & even though everyone tries to deny it, of course there was mixing.
Many Romani derived words are now in common English usage. Cosh (from cosht =stick) Wonga - English slang for money (Wonger = coal). Cushy/Cushty Kusht...Chav....etc
Irish travellers are completely different group.

I'm Brazilian gypsy and I don't that my family is romani until I made 15 years when I start searching for information about that. My grandma came to Brazil, change her name and never spoke about her gypsy family, so all I know is the fact that we are romani.

I am a gypsy, a romany gypsy to be more specific. I'm white as well and idk the language in full but it doesnt mean I'm not allowed to call myself a gypsy. The older people in my family are more darker toned then I am. I'm one of the paler ones.

I live on land next door to every member of my family (cousins, 2nd cousins, uncles and aunts, grandparents etc) in the stereotypical mobile house/bungalow and live like a traveller/gypsy.

I kind of find it irritating when people say that because I ain't Indian looking or know the language in full that I ain't a gypsy. It's in my DNA. Im a gypsy whether they like it or not 🤣 Ik the phrases etc such as "dawty" & "mush" and I have an accent of a typical gypsy but I dont look like one part from my long hair. I live like one because I am one 🤣🤣🤣 I'm proud of my gypsy background uwu

Tbf tho it's nice to watch these vids, hear what others think and read comments. Makes me feel happy

Just because someone has been separated from the language and culture doesn't mean they are no longer of that ethnicity. I don't speak Romanes, up to about 20 years ago few people did in my family. It's only been with the influx of Eastern European Roma that it's made a resurgence, at least in Germany. It was a matter of survival, just speaking or responding to it could get you shot. My Grandfather forbade his children from speaking anything but German. Even if we had, I wouldn't have learned it, as I was forcibly taken away and raised as a social orphan, forced to learn only German culture and language. It was so strict we were not even allowed to speak or learn the local German / Bavarian dialect.
