Montgomery says it's tough for the youth to fathom the conditions since they didn't live through them. She also says during dire times on the road, they would have to use the bathroom in the woods since they wouldn't be able to go in restaurants. To make matters worse, some hotels wouldn't keep more than one African-American musician, resulting for many sleepless nights on the tour bus.
The chef also touched on the importance of soul food and its rich roots. She also shows gratitude to the people who turned soul food into a positive meal and feeling for African Americans.

I understand what she's saying because my mom was born in the sixties and my grandma was born on a plantation. So I know the hardships of everything being so fresh only one generation before me. The struggle and hardship is still prevalent because the presence exists. You never forget about those things when they are so fresh and close to the reality of it all. Which is what some people don't understand. Things like this is not something you can brush out of your memory because it falls very close to home. These things didn't happen a million years ago to where it doesn't affect of newer generations. My mom and my grandma lived through all of these issues. So I'm proned to know all about it. It would be different if it was 10 generations prior but that's not the case. So history for me, is just like yesterday.
