Mysterious billion-dollar land grab: Bipartisan lawmakers probe China's purchases of U.S land

A group of bipartisan lawmakers is investigating China purchasing a lot of American farmland including some around United States military bases. In the last five years, California Congressman John Garamendi says an investment group spent close to a billion dollars buying more than 50,000 acres of land.

According to the Chinese Property Law, foreigners cannot buy land in China as the land belongs to the state. However, foreigners who work, study, or live in China can purchase property according to their needs and budget. This means that as an American, you can buy property in China, but you cannot own the land on which the property is built.
