I think the reason why you have problems with the stepouts might ve the fact that in step 1 the small lines at the sides are next to each other and in step 2 they are alternating. That way, when you connect them, they go diagonal and not straight across. If we'd do the little lines like in step 1, we should not connect to the one across, but to the one that's below it. (I hope, I am intelligible, as I am from Germany and have some trouble to describe what I mean... 😂)

I just started tangling a couple weeks ago and I’m happy I found you! I’m having fun binging your 100 days project of 2019… in February, 2022. My Celtic knot template is filling up!
I appreciate Mia Gleissner’s tip about putting the vertical lines alternating rather than next to each other and making sure the first “horizontal” lines are angled down diagonally.
