Tips if your friend actually has hearing loss!
1) If it’s unilateral or uneven, make sure to know which side is worse and then sit on the other side of them
2) Try to face them when speaking. Even though they may hear you, often it helps to follow lips as well.
3) Avoid areas with lots of background noise.
4) Don’t be really loud unless we ask you to either speak up or seem to be having trouble following, and if so, don’t yell. It can make the consonants less clear.
5) Speaking of consonants, try to make sure you’re actually making them clear. It is really easy to slip into combining them (the most famous example being d and t) and if there is ambiguity it can make it hard to understand. Even if there isn’t, it can make the conversation take longer to process and be more difficult to keep up with.
6) Listen to what they ask you. General tip for working with people.

There was this one friend of mine who was meeting another friend of mine for the first time. I told the first friend a little bit about the friend they were going to meet and how she is pretty gullible but I’ve known her forever so I know she would have a good laugh afterwords. So the first friend as soon as she comes in the house and she sees all of our other mutual friends and then the gullible friend, she goes up to her, arms extended and pulls her into a hug. “Sabrina! It’s so good to see you again! I haven’t seen you for ages! You remember me right?” My first friend exclaims. Sabrina, the gullible, was trying to recount every encounter with every stranger in her life at that moment in time. The other mutual friends saw what was going on and played into the charade for a few minutes longer before I freed Sabrina from her nightmare and revealed she and the first friend had never met.
Fun times. What a lighthearted laugh that was.
