Sorry, one thing: Amelia Bloomer was reacting to the many layers of petticoats that made dresses very heavy and restrictive. The cage crinoline was an innovation in womenswear which made it possible to wear the fashionable silhouette while allowing women much more freedom of movement, as well as allowing skirts to become so big that they practically enforced a personal space bubble around the wearer-- both reasons why it was relentlessly satirised in comics like the ones you show. It hadn't been invented at this point in history. Amelia Bloomer actually went back to wearing skirts after the invention of the cage crinoline, since it had essentially solved the problem she was protesting.

The toy industry also had a lot to do with assigning colors to genders.

I feel like we also need to talk about how people associate men wearing dresses with who they are attracted to and feel the need to assume or overly speculate about someone's private life. (i.e: BTS Jimin who often wears women's clothing) I've seen it countless times; a man wears a dress and suddenly people begin to speculate his sexuality when really - it CAN be just a form of self expression. If it's not confirmed by said person, just let them be. Clothing choices =/= Sexual orientation.

My brother is ADDICTED to his kilt that I made him. He calls it his "man skirt" and he plays football in it, he he goes hiking in it, and goes out with his mates in it, ect. He's 17 and a proper manly dude, goes to the gym (in his kilt, when he feels like it) and then to the pub, again, a proper dude bro guy. He sketched out a dress that he wants me to make him for Christmas and ya, I'm working on it. We went to pick out some linens and and silks and ribbons for it before the last lockdown and I've been hand stitching it and tailoring it for him the whole month of lockdown and he loves it. Says that he wants to wear it for Christmas dinner.

Gendering clothes is so utterly and unbelievably stupid

Just how can someone be like: clothes have a gender. It is a piece of clothing.

“It’s an insult to look more feminine” that really stuck w me. Well said!!

you know, I've never understood why men couldn't wear dresses. This whole situation reminded me of when I was younger and I had an argument with my friend because I didn't understand that why that was an issue. I kept saying how I (girl) could wear pants but guys couldn't wear a skirt or dress. Their whole argument would boil down to "because it looks weird" or because "it makes them look like a girl" (which shouldn't even be an insult lmao).
It just doesn't make sense.

Why are people worrying about who's wearing clothing "not associated with their gender" when the real problem is not having sizable and functioning pockets? 😑

I love how even the vintage photographs you use are diverse and historically accurate

I love how the historic fashion community just all came out to call bullshit that allegation of "men are not manly because of their clothes".

God I love this woman she comes on here with her tiny eyebrows looking like a cool Snow White with that fake Van Gogh in the background and it just gives me the right does of serotonin

Kind of wild how Harry Styles is getting all this attention for a dress when Billy Porter has been winning the dress game for years now

The whole Harry styles cover has actually made me rethink my own wardrobe and consider experimenting with skirts, makeup, jewellery etc. I've taken so many of my style choices for granted when they're so gender based.

i’m v early so ofc i haven’t watched the video, but as a scottish person who grew up surrounded by men in kilts at any formal event/national football game i very much agree with the title

My brain: Harry Styles is not doing anything groundbreaking but it's nice he managed to start a conversation within mainstream media

It took me this long to realize Disney’s Hercules isn’t wearing pants...

I'm a trans guy. I'm also a makeup artist, and I wear clothes from androgynous to hyperfeminine. I clicked this so fast.
