Ever wondered how a bike helmet can save your life?
A bicycle helmet is more than just a piece of gear; it's a lifesaver. It protects your head by absorbing impact when hitting it on the ground. There were 15,158 cycling-related casualties in the UK in 2023, including 83 fatalities.
Head injuries are a significant cause of death and serious harm in cycling collisions. Wearing a cycle helmet can prevent or lessen the severity of head injuries during accidents.

A bike helmet consists of several key components:
Outer Shell: Made of polycarbonate plastic or ABS, it provides an initial barrier against impacts and protects the inner liner.
Inner Foam Liner: Typically made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) or polypropylene (EPP), it absorbs shock by compressing during a crash.
Retention System: A series of fasteners that help adjust the helmet to fit comfortably around your head.
Chin Straps: Keeps your helmet in place during impact.
Comfort Padding: Ensures a snug fit and adds extra comfort.

Bike helmets have ventilation holes to allow air to flow through, carrying away heat and sweat. This helps regulate your body temperature and keeps you more comfortable during your ride. Road helmets often have many specially shaped vents for better airflow, while mountain biking and BMX helmets have fewer holes but are designed for greater impact protection.

A helmet protects your head by distributing impact energy across the surface and absorbing shock through its foam liner. The outer shell spreads the energy, while the foam compresses to absorb most of it, reducing the amount transferred to your head. Advanced helmets with MIPS technology have a low friction layer that reduces rotational forces, further protecting the brain.

Bike helmets should be replaced after any crash or significant impact. They typically last for 3-5 years even if not involved in a crash, as daily wear and tear degrade their protective abilities over time. Avoid buying second-hand helmets, as their protective integrity is uncertain.

Understanding the science behind bicycle helmets shows just how vital they are for your safety. Always wear your helmet correctly to ensure maximum protection. And remember, cycle helmets do not prevent crashes from happening, so ride safely and cautiously.

Here in Australia helmets are mandatory.
It seems like common sense to wear one but as the expression goes, "No brain, no pain."

Everytime I have spilled (always unexpected and freak accidents).. My head has inevitably collided with the ground - or pavement... I hate wearing them yet I enjoy having my brain intact.

My pet hate is the wearing of helmets perched on the back of the head and not fastened tightly under the chin. If you have gone to the expense and minor miscomfort of using a helmet, you really should get as much protection as possible.
I'm also amazed at the number of kids I see cycling to school with the helmets their parents have insisted they wear when they set off, dangling from their handlebars.
