Incorrect.

The "Error macro" was a real thing. However its origins were not as a character sprite bug. But in the games maitenence menu.

The audit screen that showed things like number of fatalities had a section called "Error Macros" which was a redirect for any time an error in the code happened. Instead of crashing the game the error would redirect to that listing and just add 1 to the number.

Because it was listed next to "Reptile appearances" and "Reptile Battles" people claimed that Ermac was another hidden character.

Edit: now in MK1 during Johnny Cage's fatal blow, right after he smashes the opponents face into the camera, in the bottom middle of the screen you'll see "error macro" in red letters
