SECRET Driving Technique To MASTER Karting (Neutral Steer). Whether it's an F1 car or a go kart, the technique every driver is trying to master is called neutral steer (or zero steer). Depending on all sorts of variables, the fastest way around a track is to use as little steering as possible because steering input creates drag. So if the tires aren't too heat sensitive and the kart/car's balance is setup correctly, you can use the pedals to dance the vehicle around the corner. It's like a hybrid between drifting and the traditional view of racing, but it's something high skill drivers are doing all the time, and always asking their engineers to try and make possible through car setup. It's a hard thing to setup for (I've maybe had a car that handled like this less than 5 times in my racing career), so it's something drivers always chasing!

I've only ever done it in racing games so it's definitely not true to life, but the feeling of keeping up an almost flat out 4 wheel drift with zero steer through a corner exit is definitely the best feeling I've had 'driving'.

Initial D called this a four-wheel drift, but most people call it slip angle.

I JUST noticed this the other day. I was able to neutral steer with just the throttle and lack thereof. I was suddenly able to overtake at almost every corner and found smooth racing lines. But it was a wet track. So I just assumed that’s why I was able to steer with the throttle. Took me 4-5 laps before I figured it out. But once I did. I was flying through the corners.

4wd drift is one of the greatest feeling when you get it right

Wow, this felt like a snippet from a Racing Masterclass. Thanks ❤

I like richard hammond's explanation on top gear a while back

There's a term for this from Initial D too, 4 wheel drift. When you're sliding all 4 wheels and can control the car with mostly throttle

Your absolutely right about this being the sweet spot, it's fast and it feels it. But in some types of racing it's an aggressive way to drive the tires and may lead to excessive loss of grip.

I have learnt a lot of this from countless hours playing dirt 5 on Playstation

Neutral steer is still drifting, The word drift just means that there is a deviation between the angle of your wheels and the direction of travel.
The reason it is so quick is that it minimizes that variation while increasing rotation.
As such, neutral steer is still a form of oversteer.

The actual middle between over and understeer is just regular driving, when your wheel input perfectly corresponds with your direction of travel while staying within the boundaries of both front and rear grip.

Excessive Oversteer scrubs too much speed, understeer requires a lot of space, driving within grip is potentially reducing speed, neutral steer is like that fine line for going fast.

Drift is the most advanced grip control technique if done right drifting will get you faster through a corner. In this video you described what most people call four wheel drift

Drifting is sliding in a controlled manner. Many think its just oversteer, but rather what you described here is also drifting

I had this happen in real life when driving on snow. Felt very good.

This was a technique pioneered by a man called Juan Fangio. It was called driving with inertia. Like a four wheel slide but with purpose. This guy was legendary holding many world championships.
The style is hardly used today because of ground effects and aerodynamics but is still the fastest way to get around a track.

It feels so cool when you do it i do it in fh5 and to see the slight marks behind you and all you have to do is hold the gas down as you see the thing perfectly slide through the apex in that perfect curve unaffected by human error but still knowing you... you were the one who sent it into motion
