About the clone thing, Sage chakra is not like regular chakra, whereas regular chakra can recover naturally by simply not putting the body on any stress, sage chakra doesn't, even after backing down from an enemy, the amount of chakra that person currently has is what he can use during the duration of that sage mode, the only way to recharge sage chakra is too empty it completely from the body and doing the entire "perfectly still" thing again, Naruto figured out a way to bypass this by letting his clone becoming the "charger" for sage chakra so he can continuously used it without the fear of running out during the battle

Not only could naruto enter it without clones, they just acted as backups.

But he does enter it whenever he needs to as he flips it on and off again during the war.

Hashirama himself was technically "assisted" as he have the golem move and act while he couldn't so he could gather senjutsu.

Hashirama was able to do it because he had wood release which can be used as long range attacks and that's why he can enter sage mode without moving. It is not instantaneously. Also about minato too, nobody knew he had sage mode so he was able to gather it off-screen. If naruto had kushina's chakra chains then he would also be able to use long range attacks thus activating sage mode just like hashirama. Although later he got kurama's tails, chakra arms or whatever but he didn't know that he can mix both and when he knew kurama was already able gather it so he didn't need it.

Too much of the nature energy turns you into stone, not too little. When Naruto was training to use it, he had to keep getting hit by the stick to remove it when he was taking too much. He also turned one of the pains into stone by having them absorb it from him.

It kinda bugs me that it’s translated as mind energy when in reality it’s spiritual energy. Mind is part of the body, so Mind energy would just be regular body energy. Spiritual energy has to do with the soul which is separate from the body, thats why sage mode is so powerful because you are mixing all the existing energies within yourself with perfect balance. Thats why mind energy doesn’t make sense.

Naruto didn't need clones or the nine tails. The only reason he had clones were for back ups and to learn it faster. Kurama didn't even mix with sage mode before they were friends except the one time they got angry at the same time
