Hellboy - Caravan Of Garbage

In 2004 Guillermo Del Toro brought us the cinematic introduction of Hellboy, a demonic entity summonded from hell but who fights for the forces of good. Played pitch perfectly by Ron Pearlman and joined by the likes of Doug Jones as Abe Sapien and Selma Blair as Liz Sherman the first movie deals with stopping the Nazi's (lead by Rasputin) from opening a portal into another dimension to bring forth Ogdru Jahad, a cthulhu like squid monster. All in all, pretty good. Pretty good we reckon. Thanks for watching

Del Toro's love for a weird fishman explained:
When he was a kid, Del Toro loved the Creature from the Black Lagoon, always feeling sympathy for the monster rather than the human characters
Abe sapian being a fish man is one of the main reasons why the hellboy franchise appealed to him

At one point Del Toro was even in discussion to helm the Dark Universe, with the hopes of making a creature from the Black Lagoon movie
He left that project because he wanted the Creature to be main focus of the film. He wanted to make a GOOD movie and Universal wanted to make The Dark Universe

After leaving that he started to work on the Shape of Water. He has since said he regrets turning down the Dark Universe, but has kind of found his own way to do it with the Shape of Water and his upcoming Frankenstein project

In summary... man just likes himself a fish man

the sincerity of these movies is always what gets me; it never says “we know this is weird, please just go with it, ” it just /does/ the weird thing and bc it’s done without any tongue in cheek, “hey this is wacky”, it makes you take it 100% seriously. you feel how much love and dedication was put into them, the way those little one off moments and elements just pad the world building, all the practical costumes and effects and puppets, this was guillermo del toro’s movie, not the studio’s movie

"The Era when they thought about shots before they filmed them"
What a casually brutal dig at all the super inflated budgets of modern Comic book movies.

Crazy that Hellboy grew up to run a mayonnaise company

Calling Ron Pearlman “ogre coded” has to be the funniest thing I’ve heard.

When I was a kid, reading about David Hyde Pierce's decision to go uncredited and put all the focus on Doug Jones made me respect him a great deal.

I mean, I already respected him because he was Niles Crane, but even more so than usual.

The loss of physical media sales has really hurt the mid/big budget films. Kevin Smith used to say it best that theater run used to be just a big commercial for the DVD and cable money. With that being gone we lost out on studios making big budget Hellboy flicks.

I will keep saying this until I die
RON PERLMAN WAS BORN TO PLAY HELLBOY and the fact he didn’t get a trilogy really pisses me off

Fun fact about the prosthetics and make up: because Doug Jones is so lean they actually needed substantially more turquoise and blue paint for him than they needed red for Perlman which led to this films working title being Blue Harvest, which was also the first title of the original Star Wars

For those of you who don’t want to wait to find out the fish romance lore: shape of water came from del toro watching black lagoon growing up and sympathizing with the gillman and wishing he’d end up with the girl instead of killed. He would draw the pair doing cute things like getting ice cream and stuff. I think Abe is just a coincidental fishman in all this

Any movie maker says "we need a great actor that doesn't mind full body makeup" and Doug Jones just materializes.

The first 2 Hellboy films are what you get when a filmmaker who loves the source material, not a bunch of cynical studio execs, make a comic book adaption.

20 years later and this movie is still awesome.

The dvd of this had amazing behind the scenes features. It went into so much detail about how they made the film.

I used to show this to friends and afterwards we'd always end up discussing how this movie feels more like a really high budget tv pilot for a show that never got made rather than something intended to always be a theatrical stand-alone film. And we'd never say it as a negative.
