This is a kinds of ceromony for dervishes for being acknowldeged or accepted into the cult, service..In this case, ertugrul symbolicly becomes a dervish who devotes his life to Islam and serving his people. Later Ottomans, some warrior groups were in fact dervishes. Many cults attended also to the battles voluntarily with their students...Some famuous sheiks were martyied in battles.. It is similar principle like teotonic knights of europe or warriors monks of japan.
