Crimea Bridge Damaged Last By In Mega Explosion Reopens | Crimea Bridge Reopens | Russia News

All lanes on a Crimean bridge damaged last year following an explosion were reopened on Thursday, coinciding with the Defender of the Fatherland Day celebrations in Russia.

The bridge's railways and car lanes heading towards the peninsula from Russia's Taman' were damaged by an explosion last October.

According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, the reopening came 39 days earlier than expected.

Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed Ukraine for the blast, which suspended traffic over the bridge and curtailed Moscow's ability to use the bridge to supply Russian troops.

The 19-kilometer (12-mile) bridge across the Kerch Strait linking the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov is the longest in Europe.

It has cost billions of dollars to build and has provided an essential link to the Crimean Peninsula that Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
