I Compared A $20 DIY SM7B To A $170 SM7B vs $400 SHURE SM7B !!

I compared a $20 DIY Shure SM7B to a $170 Shure SM7B I got from Alibaba and the $400 Shure SM7B bought in America.
In this video I do some sound testing and of course share my thoughts if it is still worth paying $400 for the Shure SM7B. The $170 also triggers some curiosity if it is actually real of fake... why is it so cheap ?

The Behringer XM8500 is worth it on its own.
Get a decent windscreen for it and position the screen so that there's a gap between the mic grille and the end of the foam.
You'll get very close sound quality and plosive reduction. If there's any difference at all that matters to you at that point you can add slight eq on the highs.

*Although* you might want to leave it as is, because the extra presence is what a lot of people end up adding to the SM7B for voice.

The thing is... While the OG one undoubtedly sounds the best.. That's still going to go through some post processing which is going to mask the signature sound of the SM7b to suit the harmonics of the project your recording is being used on.

In the end, if you want the aesthetics, just get the 3d printed part. If you want the sound, just get SM57 and apply Julian Krause's EQ profile with Equalizer APO. There is a foam and shockmount for the SM57 that's going to fix plosives make it look aesthetically premium respectively. Hell, if you want to go the extra mile, an SM58 with the 3d printed parts along with some aftermarket foam for the SM7b and tuned using Julian Krause's EQ profile for the SM57 (they use the same capsules) is going to net you the best price-to-performance ratio.

1. Obviously the original one better but compare to the cheapest one
2. i'll make one by myself
3. did you give post processing in the sound of the mic? since it's sounds less different from one to another. Idk if it's the headset/phone effect (giving my ear more detail) or it just sounds less different.
4. you forgot to test the keyboard clicking test for the cheapest one.

My recommendation:

1. make it more simple one. like

First section you show the case from 1 to 3. from each one you tell your feeling after unboxing it.

Second section: Mic test no post processing from 1 to 3. It's for the noise comparations.

3rd section: Proximity test or Explosive test like you talk with explosive word like B or T.

4rd section: Range test from touching your lips, one palm, 3m and 5 meter

As a headphone user ...the 20 USD version sounds like s**t. Way to harsh, could not listen to that for one hour.
Maybe one can EQ the high frequencies out?

Regarding the Alibaba one ... yep, it is a fake. You can watch tons of videos about "identifying a fake SM7B on YouTube".
And it sounds like a fake too but better than the 20 USD version.
