This situation happened to my husband- it was for a "promotion" to a salaried position within his company, they ended up offering way less than what he expecting and actually less than was making annually as an hourly worker, he asked them to at least meet his current salary and they wouldn't do it, so he didn't take it. They gave the job to someone less qualified who gets constant complaints from staff. The next year hourly staff got a raise that salaried staff didnt get, so if he had accepted the offer he would have been making even less.

Companies don't negotiate anymore, if they aren't offering what you need and you know your being under-offered, sometimes it is better to walk away.

I asked for a 10% raise and was told that asking is not polite lol and that the company will decide on its own about raises (they decided on like 2-3%). I started interviewing elsewhere and got an offer from a different company. They didn’t know my salary and I totally bluffed and asked for 50% more, I had nothing to lose all to gain. To my surprise I got it. I also got another raise here already and I’m making like 60% more than a year ago where they didn’t give me 10%. The previous company was using people, it was well known big corpo so they were underpaying. It was my luckiest day when they denied my request.

Just tell them. "If you think hiring a professional is expensive. Wait until you hire an amateur."

Always negotiate your salary! They always low ball initially because most people are afraid to ask.

It's all about knowing your worth. Most companies don't negotiate anymore and will simply move on to the next best candidate, who may or may not be qualified for the position. At the end of the day, only you know what your willing to settle for to meet your life obligations, so act on it accordingly.

It still amazes me how many places are surprised when I ask what a rough salary range is when I get a call for an interview. I value my time, and theirs and I'm not applying for a job to make less than I do now

I just went through this. I am currently working hourly as a contractor and the company wanted to hire me, but was $30K below my asking salary! So I'm still a contractor.

When interviewing for a position, I was asked what my current salary was (I don't think my salary at a new job should be based on my previous salary; it should be based on the job and that job's salary range). I answered the question and was told the job I applied for had a starting salary of "$X to $X". I stated I would hope the offer would be at least $X, to which the HR person with whom I was dealing made it a point to talk about the healthcare, life insurance, and 401K benefits, etc. I responded that the benefits were exceptional, but I have to pay my bills now. The offer came in at the high end of the range.

Employers don’t care what you can afford to live on..do you want the job or not and what are you willing to accept is on you not the employer

I think it depends on the situation. You need to be realistic about your experience level and value within the field. If you are someone with no experience in the field you are trying to enter, you should do some research to determine if it is a fair offer. If it's fair and you have no other offers to leverage, take it. If you have some leverage, use it with the understanding you may lose out on that job. I had a friend with little experience, who tried to negotiate, and they rescinded the offer. I was shocked, but apparently it does happen sometimes. People who have experience should definitely leverage their current salary to try and negotiate.

This doesn’t seem like sound advise. Women not negotiating their salary is a thing. I can accept not being obnoxious, even going back on a signed deal, but people should negotiate in a tactful manner.

You walk in with you're desired number in mind... if they're number is less... you ABSOLUTELY negotiate. Don't listen to this fool and leave money on the table.

Don't even go unless you know the pay range, not worth your time. It's always the lowest paying company in town that doesn't put the hourly pay up front before interview in my experience.

It doesn't matter to them what you need. Show your worth to them.

either decline it and move on, or take it and don't show up, or show up for a month and leave asking for more.
the negotiation for salary never really ends.
