As of today, further development on Spellbreak has been cancelled. Proletariat has announced the end of Spellbreak with the servers shutting down later next year. Today, we're looking back at the unique mage battle royale, what they did right and how it failed.

By just looking at the comments i can tell you built a community of bright individuals. It's a shame spellbreak went down like this.

I remember about a month ago, Iogged on Xbox and thought they would be FAR ahead by now (you know how you let a early game build up and add new stuff). Buddies and I squaded up and only 20 people in a game. It was depressing. Hate it couldn't go further. The elements and magic implementation really struck a chord with me.

The game was fun but whenever there was a stream from devs, they refused to hear the community on suggestions and ideas… It is fine to draw a line but not being that restrictive. The community’s opinion is important.

Simple. lack of new gauntlets, don't think they added any in all their time working on the game. The flying was to much at first with the shots being projectiles fighting in a 3D/ 360 degree manner just didnt work alot of the time. The air mobility made alot of the combat combos just not work well since alot were ground based, slow moving or otherwise stationary.

As someone who started playing at the official launch what killed it for me was all the beta testers who already had a massive head start. The skill gap made it really hard to enjoy the game.

Battle Royales have been so oversaturated in the last few years that if you're not one of the big 4, you aren't gonna last long. Sucks that it's like that but that's just the industry

I LOVED this game. It's so sad that they never properly updated the game and just let it die. It was the best battle royal. Skill based with enough luck to make it spicy.

My squad stopped playing when they changed the hover mechanics. Before, you could let go of hover and it would instantly stop like you’d expect but then they changed it so that when you go to hover it always uses up a pre-determined amount of hover energy.. this made it nearly impossible to conserve energy on quick taps and made hovering through tight places or super short hover spots too annoying.

I think the biggest issue is marketing.. Even at and before launch, I never saw anything. A streamer I watch by chance tried it out otherwise i’ve never seen a single advertisement for it.

I played a lot when it first came out, and was having a lot of fun with it. But once I realized most of my lobbies were filled with bots, it kinda put a sour taste in my mouth and I didn't really want to play nearly as much.

I can't imagine my luck. Two days prior is so badly had an urge to play, and finally for the summer i convinced like 8 of my friends to try the game. When i opened up the game after download i felt really bad seeing the countdown. We did some gameplay and yes the lobbies feel... empty, but the magic gameplay, flying around or turning invis etc is just so damn amazing.

It's sad they didn't make it, Sucks BRs are just too many in the pool atm and so it was such a huge risk.

Initially it was a fun game but the skill gap was huge. I was getting absolutely destroyed from all angles in every match until I just stopped playing

My biggest issue was you wait to play the game, you get into a game killed by someone who is better usually pretty quick, and then have to wait again to play rinse and repeat. If you could keep playing even after being knocked out that would have been so much better than having to wait. The last update added the competition team mode (whatever it was called) but that limited where on the map you could play. So bottom line to me is no one wants to wait and wait to play a game no matter what game it is; because there are so many other games paid or free that you do not have to wait to play and to me that was its biggest mistake.

Your assertion that it was because there were only mages unfortunately makes not a lot of sense. Exchange spells/magic with weapons in your text and you could take your arguments agains almost any shooter... Spellbreak went down because of the lack of content updates like new gauntlets ore maps + bad marketing and a missing player base as result.
I believe a concept like this could have worked. Under a big publisher that has the manpower to do so, Spellbreak would possibly even grown to the next big hype.

Spellbreak was such a special game. One of a kind. The best TDM mode I've ever played. I'm going to really miss it

was a great idea... i early backed.... but after two updates after public beta i realised the studio had no idea what they were doing and were doomed to a <5 year run. turns out they couldn't hold an audience for even 3 years....

again, the base ideas were excellent... the development cycle was not....

Good visuals and concept, poor execution. The combos were limited and too hard to land, no new gauntlets or updates that changed how the already present ones functioned. Also, not being able to switch both gauntlets during the match made the already limited gameplay, even more limited

Pretty sure it launched as an epic exclusive really early on into epic launchers life and i'm sure that hurt it's over all impact if it launched on steam at the same time i think it would have had a much larger initial playerbase and given it more impact to maybe get more things done but who knows. i thought it played ok but the mobility was insane and you had to be a trick shot god to actually be effective and that made ice gauntlet OP because it was a precision weapon. you're right about it feeling to much like a shooter when it should of felt like mages fighting mages

i love the concept of spellbreak so much, but i dislike the gameplay, id love to see a game that is similar to it, prehaps not a battle royale tho

Honestly, I had a blast with this game and will cherish it as the best BR I've played personally. It had so much personality in my eyes but it lacked any depth in terms of branching out the gauntlets. I was playing this game so much to the point where it felt plain. The concept for the game and how they made the movement feel was the top and I will always want something like this but they failed on the gauntlets and new maps. Domination was amazing but it felt too late for the time the state the game was in. I wish someone can create this game concept without the BR aspect because it can take all of my money.
