I had a friend years ago who had a Doberman. He warned me that she'd bitten everyone when she first met them. To his surprise, 10 minutes after getting there she was in my lap getting belly rubs. I never did get bit, and he couldn't figure it out. She was smarter than he was and knew I was a animal person. Animals have been drawn to me for some reason.

I think all dogs get heartbroken especially the most loyal ones.

I agree with everything you said here. I also have two Dobermans and they must be here beside me all the time, it’s their job to make sure I’m ok and safe. I love my Dobermans.

Had a doby for 11 years till cancer took him. Can vouch for everything you said. Their loyalty is extreme, & my boy went on a hunger strike once when I left him for two weeks, even though it was in his own home with my father. We were never apart again till he passed

I love the breed too, and have owned a couple of them. They are very willful but trust those who treat them well. They can be very intimidating to outsiders. They have this look when they scrutinize people that they are going to tear your arm off if you're not careful. They are utilized as police dogs in many places in Europe, especially Germany. Thanks for your observations.

Great explanation of the Doberman and the job they were bred to do. Intelligent and loyal and more lovable than the average person realizes. Great video!!!!

The Doberman is a wonderful dog. We should understand what MWD or police K9's work actually consists of. The Doberman was used by the US Marine Corp in the 1940's, and the pictures of marines coming off landing craft in the 2nd Battle of Guam with Dobermans are awe-inspiring. However, we shouldn't think that Dobermans were going into combat, charging machine gun nests or fighting enemy soldiers that had rifles with bayonets. That's not what they do. MWD past and present serve primarily as sentries (watchdogs), and have had an increasing role in explosives detection. They do not need to fight and their ability to fight has no practical purpose. Dobermans are too sedentary to serve as sentries. They spend too much time sleeping and when they're awake, they're not particularly alert or suspicious. Dobermans lack the drive that is needed for determination and commitment to working a long time searching. They don't show the motivation that is needed for a highly-driven detection dog. Dobermans are too heavy. Why repel with a 90 pound dog on your harness when a 60 pound dog can do a better job when you get where you're going? Dobermans don't live long enough. Research has shown half of European-line Dobermans are dead by the age of 6, and multiple studies have shown that for the Doberman breed overall, mean life expectancy is not more than 9 years. The number of those years a Doberman could actually be employed working is much less. The Belgian Malinois will live 14 years or more, and because it matures faster, and has fewer health problems, it can work sooner and longer, more than doubling the number of years it can be employed working.

Many of the same things are relevant to police K9's. While the police and military may want a "dual-purpose" patrol dog that can apprehend people, the primary purpose is detection, not manfighting. For police, narcotics detection is a great revenue generator. Sending a dog on a felony suspect is a risky money-loser.

What is it supposed to mean that Dobermans were bred as "protection dogs" ? Dobermann did not have enough time to achieve a meaningful purpose with his breeding before he died. Since then, the Doberman has been bred for over 100 years to win dog shows. Dobermans perform poorly at the protection "sports, " and while these can be dismissed as "games, " what is "real" protection work? Whatever it is, it's probably foolishness.

My point isn't to bash the Doberman. I think the expectations that arise from deluded beliefs about a dog breed do not benefit the dogs. I hope to see the Doberman breed and the individual dogs for what they really are and appreciate them for that.

One of my friends has two dobies and the female absolutely loves me. The male likes whenever I give him attention. I hope to have a dobie as a service dog.

Dobermans are my favorite dog by far. It’s not even close for any other dog.
That being said, I’ve heard they are to high strung and loud explosions can make them tweak.
Which wouldn’t matter to me as I don’t work in those environments.
I don’t know if this is true, it’s just what I’ve heard .
What do you think?

I’ve had both Dobermans & GSDs. I prefer GSD’s just because they make better working dogs, Dobermans make better family pets.

Dobermans don’t really have the type of drive to be working in the stuff I do, not to mention their health issues are absolutely horrible. That really sucks because I do think if Doberman didn’t have so many health issues. They would really be the best dog out there. Our Doberman passed away last year from DCM, at only six years old.

I think I’m gonna be sticking with shepherds for while, but I definitely wouldn’t mind owning a Doberman again. I just can’t for while because I can’t stand to lose a dog so early again.

Within my years of owning both breeds, I haven’t had a single issue when it comes to my shepherds, they’re confident, not sensitive, social, high drive, and extremely loyal. The only thing that really sets them apart from Dobermans, is shepherds typically are more confident less sensitive and have less health issues.

Thank you for these informations and congrats for your beautiful dogs. I’m 57 and fresh divorced and a dob will be my next best friend in few months and I can’t wait.

Bc they got more bonded with a single individual. They were the original. Often imitated never duplicated. Dobermans are bred for PERSONAL PROTECTION only dog ever. 1 person dog.

The true reason is Dobermans tend to resist training more than a couple of the more used breeds. They're not stupid but they don't rate as highly as Belgian Malinois or German Shepherds. The latter two breeds two are also eager to please, which drives their training. Dobermans are a great breed and dog, they just don't possess the required awareness and willingness to stay 'On Mission' as say the German Shepherd or the Malinois.
