Iconic Australian racehorse Black Caviar dies aged 17

#breakingnews #horseracing #sport

Champion Australian racehorse Black Caviar has been put down after giving birth to a foal, a day before her 18th birthday.

Black Caviar had been battling laminits, a painful condition in the hooves of horses that leads to more than seven per cent of equine deaths with many of the animals needing to be euthanised, according to the Royal Veterinary College of the University of London.

She was put down at Scone Equine Hospital after giving birth to a foal.

Black Caviar was undefeated in her 25 race starts, including claiming an Australian record 15 Group One victories, and earned just under $8 million over her career.

Those mealymouthed statements of "sadness" by the owners ... I just can't! To them, a source of income died. 18 years old, she should have just enjoyed her pasture. She more than earned that much.

Australia needs an independent authority to govern the entire industry. This should not be a time to nostalgically look back at her racing career; it should be a wake up call to preserve equine well-being before profit.

Black Caviar obviously died in exquisite agony. Horses do not die of laminitis, they are put down because their condition has been mismanaged. And breeding a laminitic 18 years old is beyond barbaric. It was never about her. Always about the $. RIP you beautiful girl.

You have called your little colt to your side, after you were taken from him. May you both find peace together in green fields, no more to be controlled by the whims of men.🐎🐎

Shameful exploitation of this beautiful equine. Pure greed. They made millions from her racing career, then foaled her into the ground. And imagine what price they’ll ask for her last foal.
ETA: Black Caviar’s last foal has followed his mother to the grave. May they rest in peace together, free from the whims of their owners and the racing industry.

Bred to death…I see they took her foal before imposing the death sentence on his mother.
Enough is never enough…Rest In Peace you deserved so much better….🖤🖤🖤

It is very sad.

Why were they breeding a mare at 17/18 years of age with a history of laminitis?

Best breeding age for brood mares is 4-15 years.

Greed killed her, putting her in foal AGAIN and the pathetic owners say they loved her....they only cared about the money and prestige not about this beautiful girl😢

I think her owners choice of the words “passed away peacefully” is a slap in the face and disrespectful to the memory of this phenomenon horse. They should be honest to the Australian public. Nothing peaceful or pain free about her last few days on this Earth and her passing. She was euthanised, probably sedated to help with her passing.

Greedy owners got nine foals out of Black Caviar. The ninth one in the morning before they put Caviar down . DISGUSTING !!!!

What type of laminitis did she have - meaning what was the cause? Since the food-induced laminitis can be treated & handled and the laminitis caused by hormones after foal birth, she simply should had not been bred again, if there was a known history (as a comment here mentioned before). If the laminitis was caused by over working it, its sad to see that she got raced to death. All over, race horses have such a sad life...RIP

we consider a 11 or 12 year old horse to be very mature or senior of age, 18 years old is very old for a horse, most horses not make it past 20 years, they were still breeding her at a extremely old age, shameful really.

Poor Black Caviar! Used and abused till the very end!
They waited until the foal could be delivered.
The greedy owners did not retire that champion - they bred her to death- 10 foals since retirement!!
