You can get cursed runes from the Trainee Mage questline in the Tree of Life, it gives 5 runes and is relatively an easy questline

Still somewhat new to the game, spent my time leveled up till 30 and quit 3 years ago, came back because of frieren's quest line, spent 3 days playing straight leveling up and did her quest n finally finished it today and excitedly went to upgrade it, didn't know cursed scroll meant to destroy the items when failed so the staff blew up before I got to even test it out. Great experience, now I'm retired once again :))

Would be nice if it would warn the players the risk of destructing the player's gear upon failing before executing the upgrade.
