In my view, the greatest interpretation of that aria.
A most precious circa 1954 78 recording of my youth discovered and listened to in a boarding school at age 16 was Caruso singing "Les Rameaux" (the palms) on one side and "Hosanna" on the other side.
After searching over a period of many years for an exact copy in many cities in Canada, France and the USA, I finally found an old lady in a little store in Manhattan who sold me two unused pressings made in the 50's. I have kept one untouched, a precious item with the seven Caruso biographies bought over the years. Caruso has been an important person in my life. Her mother was completely devoted to his very early singing and he always carried a photo of her. He was 14 years old when she died.

I have a copy of this picture it's a little bit bent but not across his face it belonged to my grandfather Eugene cavoli.

Mixing was primitive in 1937. There was, to the best of my knowledge, no way to separate the vocal from the orchestration, so I am forced to conclude Victor's strategy was to drown out the original orchestration. In the 1913 original, the orchestra is definitely behind Caruso, softer than Caruso. In this recording, it is as loud, louder, overwhelming at the end of the piece. Was it really that simple? It's the only way I can imagine it was done.
