I’m sure someone will find this fascinating…….sadly on this occasion I didn’t. Tech talk in general just doesn’t float my boat. Appreciate it does for others. Horses for courses and all that. Thank you Mark/Toby anyway for taking the time & effort to give it a look see.

It would have been nice to compare a Garmin XT against the BMW Connected app. Also: navigation units can come up with different routes to the same destination even when using the same routing parameters because of differences in the routing algorithm and/or the map database i.e. the database describing the road and street characteristics. So route differences when comparing different nav devices are to be expected although they are using the same satellites to determine the bike’s position. Different position accuracy can also play a role.

The problem with these navigation apps: the phone rings and you lose the nav, so unless you’ve got touchscreen gloves, you have to take a glove off to switch back to the nav app. Total show stopper.

I'm guessing you were letting both systems choose a route, rather than follow a planned route you had set?

Is the nav 6 the same as the Zumo XT? My experience with Calimoto is its slow to update and gets confused when you miss turnings, however the online planner is quite good for planning routes which I load into my XT.

I have calimoto and found it's UK mapping to be abysmal on curvy roads nothing below high numbered B roads is shown or used. In the Yorkshire dales you can't even instruct it to go down some roads it's progress to the village and turns around even though the tarred road continues. Yet a dowmloaded gpx of ACT pyrenees loads perfectly. Perhaps they didn't want to pay for our quality cartography!

Did you use the free or premium version of calimoto?

People moan like mad about the Nav 6 but personally have never had an issue with Apart from the the ridiculous price obviously. Seriously considering the xt though, half the price and much better apparently, the downside is you have to buy separate kit to put it on the GSA.

Had a look at it and they what £60 per year. I think i'll stick with My garmin XT and use Basecamp as it allow me to make my own routes.

Some of the problems I'm having with this review is you are comparing an app to a dedicated system and the satnav will always win as phones are not satnavs they can just use an app. I bet if you could put the Garmin software on a phone it wouldn't be as good as on the nav6.
