Surely, the primal sanctity of the man-woman bond (as basis for thriving familial life and social order) is the point, not the artificiality of "marriage" ceremony, pretense, pomp, or institutional (legal) necessity.

The Bible’s commendation of marriage is pretty scant. You have “marriage is honorable in all” in Hebrews and “he who finds a good wife finds a good thing” in Proverbs. My opinion the former is simply stating marriage of itself isn’t sinful and the latter is a truism.

OTOH you have the apostle Peter and Paul clearly saying it is better not to marry.

Overall it comes across that marriage is a neutral act.

"The most important discussion since reformation?" Isn't that bit exaggerated and misleading? It sounds like such discussion was not present in the past. I dare to say that it was there - Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes (XVI century) and The Doll by Bolesław Prus (XIX century) are just two example that comes to my mind but I'm sure there was more.
I think that we became detached from past discussions. Reconnecting to it would give us much deeper understanding and insight to current problems.
