What does Mason Mount actually do?

Mason Mount has been a mainstay ever since he broke into the Chelsea team, through three different managers, and three different styles. Plus he’s Gareth Southgate’s first-choice attacking midfielder for England.

But why? He’s always there, but what does he do? Jon Mackenzie explains, Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

He really is able to do pretty much anything you ask of him at a good level too, truly jack of all trades, but a master of none. The only thing lacking from Mount right now is better individuality, the problem with being the perfect cog is that you become very textbook and thus the opposition can stop you if they are well structured. You can't break a well crafted structure with safe generic plays, chaos or "magic" is what breaks opposition defenses and this is what I think he's missing to truly become a superstar.

The Mount Vs Foden debate has raged on for far too long. In the England side, Foden is more naturally gifted but in the system England want to flourish in, both players fit into different roles. Mount in the 8 and Foden out on the left provides both the creative flair and concise technical ability to succeed. At Chelsea we don't see Mount in the 8 enough and I think a midfield refresh is coming to enable mount to return to the 8 rather than lost out wide like he sometimes does.

he’s a jack of all trades. wish he could get more goals in but he certainly doesn’t deserve to be trash talked how he is.

I've never understood why mount has gotten such harsh criticism. He is a great player who can operate in many positions, is a good presser and has bags of energy, links up well with those around him and he has quality in passing, creating, getting into spaces and he can offer a lot from set pieces. The only thing I would say though is that maybe for both club and country there are players who deserve a chance to start more consistently as they have the capacity to potentially do better

Mount Is a fantastic player. He might not have the technique of foden or grealish but he's very clever tactically. He finds spaces. Can pass. Score. He reminds Me of Thomas muller

They're a bit different, but this reminds me of some of the discussion around Mark Noble at West Ham. Other fans might be surprised to know there were frequent calls to drop/replace Noble with stronger, faster players thoughout his West Ham career. Yet every manager, I think nine, really relied on him.

I think a more relevant video is "What does Jorginho do?". People give him way more stick than Mount, yet he's been a fixture for every Chelsea side since Sarri bought him. Managers love him, fans hate him

One bad run of form and people ignore everything he's achieved aged 23. Double figures for goals and assists in the league last season but apparently he doesn't contribute much in terms of goals.
Assisted the winning goal in a Champions League final, scored against Madrid in the semis and has been Chelsea's best player for the last 3 years.

29 goal contributions last season. He’s improving every season. Had a slow start like last time too this season but he will improve.

His ability to cover so many positions and to be tireless for 90 minutes straight is fabulous.

Mount was incredible in the cl run. Play him in a 433 and he's a baller. Young players always have a bad season or two. Mount is already twice poty for Chelsea. He'll come back strong

I think Chelsea's biggest issue is us lacking goal scoring chances.
I believe the reason for this issue is that Mount plays the position of the main chance creator, but doesn't have the skillsets yet for a top 4 chance creator. However, as pointed out in this video, Mount is too good to drop as well.

Because of this, I think Mount catches a lot of flack from Chelsea fans as our performances are suffering due to this, but it's not his fault. This then causes him to become this sort of marmite character until he can improve his chance creation.

Mason mount situation is like playing Jordan Henderson from Liverpool behind the striker or as a 8 just because he runs around and can press. Only difference is mason has a smaller body, so he can get into tight spaces but stills fails to show creativity and prolific goalscoring.

It's funny how 2 years ago everyone in the universe wanted a Mason Mount. Put him as your CAM and he performs. Stick him on the wing and he performs. Put him in the center of the pitch and he performs.

There were other better players at those positions but whatever you ask from Mount he just went out and did it. You need him to pass, he passes. You need him to shoot more he did that. You need him to lock down a winger he went all in. Because of this he hit the rarified air of being one of the top 3 British players under 21 and the sky was the limit.

Of course this is probably his curse. He never got a chance to stick in one place to become one of the best at a single position. Chelsea kept changing coaches, tactics and identities. Then the team just began bringing in more and more players who only played in a single position on the pitch and they were just better than Mount.

I can truly see him picking up the pieces and coming back in a big way. I dont know where or when but Mason Mount can ball.

He reminds me of di maria when he was at madrid.. he could play at cm because of his work rate and dribbling etc but drifted into attacking positions and wide positions easily. A utility type of player who’s also class, not just average.

*As with every video you guys have produced, this is extremely well done.*

being a jack of all trades is something he shouldnt become. i say this because if he is constantly having his position changed then there will get to a point where he doest develop futher as a player like we are seeing now. Same thing happened to Dele Ali when they tried making him an all rounder and it didnt end up well for him

He´s an amazing player, this season has been the weakest so far, but thats on the team as well, still, Mount is a very important player, when you put the tactical rigor, work rate and talent together, you get an amazing player.
