The Saddleridge fire broke out in Sylmar near the 210 Freeway on Thursday night and is burning out of control, threatening thousands of homes.

It is not coincidence why fires seem to have started much more frequently now. The reason why these fires have started is not because (well, not directly because) of global warming or anything like that, but it really is still our fault. Basically, in the 1920s, public opinion was strongly against devastating fires, and so laws were passed that empowered us to really be able to stop the fires before they could actually burn through large quantities of land. However, this allowed for forests to become denser, which in turn allowed fires to spread quicker and become even more devastating. Before our interference, fires would destroy primarily the lower vegetation, leaving bigger vegetation, like trees, to flourish, which is a cycle that continued regularly and maintained forests. So, by killing fires now, we are giving birth to future, and more devastating, ones in the near future.
