'The Shield' Hand Drawn 2D Animation Process Breakdown

Some process of my Hand Drawn Rough 2D Animation shot "The Shield."

Some people were asking for roughs of this shot to see the process a bit, and here is what I was able to dig up.

There is some live action reference that I filmed first, followed by the first rough version in which everything having been mostly worked out (after many revisions). After that I realized tying down from that version would be pretty difficult so I wanted to have something closer to the final model while I fleshed out the cape/punches more. After that is the final tie down.

There is a lot I would like to change if I could go back and do it again, but I learned a lot on this shot as it was pretty challenging, but a lot of fun all the same.

Also the timing charts were more notes for myself and I wouldn't recommend using them to learn from as things changed timing wise and I don't believe they were updated.

Thanks for checking out the video!

Holy hell I love it. No wonder the physics in this piece felt so grounded, especially the follow-through on that cape! Awesome choice for a progression shot, thanks for putting together. Also your video reference had me rolling because out of context it's just a guy going nuts in his living room 😂

I too do traditional animation, I don't draw in digital, it has much more, it comes to life. I hope you like my animations to inspire and convey passions. Good art to all.

Were the drawings for the animation done with traditional pencil and paper or was everything done in a 2d drawing/animation computer program?

That's really great stuff. Are you self-taught or did you have classes?

Cool animation but I feel like if they had the dexterity to shoot the staff out of his hand, they would have just hit him with an arrow before he could finish making the shield. The shield making process looks very cool and intricate but would look more practical if done faster/ in less steps.

Great work! Your drawings are really good. Maybe it's not easy to answer but I would like to ask if you've had trouble at some point to draw characters on model while keeping them 3dimensionally. And if so, how did you practice in order to construct the characters on model? Specially those that are harder to draw like the one in this animation?

This is an absolutely incredible sequence and even more amazing because you did it solo!
