I wish that car manufacturers reissued their cars. I'd love to buy a 50's or 60's designed car with modern technology in it

Early auto design continued the look of carriages. This was still evident in 1920's styling.

my man really explained a whole design of cars in 20 minutes

The current automotive design era should be called: "The Angry Monster" era. Every Toyota wants to beat you, steal your money, and punch your child.

Man, Ed's got balls of steel, playing it fairly risky with copyright infringement, using those last two songs for the 2000's and 2010's chapters. Great video

Man, how is this channel not so much bigger than it is?
Keep it up, fantastic content and it feels like it's narrated by a Dutch Christopher Walken

I like how 1950's-1980's cars are very stylish

Modern headlight design have been heavily influenced by led technology. The front end design has also been somewhat decided by modern safety legislation too.

The first cars were called “Horseless Carriages” because that’s what they looked like.

The oldest design for a car in America is the Jeep Wrangler which still has articulated fenders. It’s a direct descendant of the Jeeps from World War 2.

Vauxhall Was taken over by Chevrolet in 1931 and that’s why the Vauxhall Victor resembles a ‘55-57 Chevy.

Great topic! I think we are heading into more angular and utilitarian territory, especially as a rejection of the commoditized jelly-bean crossover shape. The other big design trend is just the move away from the car to the SUV and truck, so sleek and minimal is out of fashion.

I was very impressed. I have avoided watching this video for some time because I sincerely doubted that anybody could encapsulate a century's worth of auto design "progress" in a 21 minute video. You managed to efficiently cover the main eras of design, the things that drove them and the attributes of each era. Very impressive.

What I love about my 1996 Ford F150 is that it has the looks of an old school pickup but has power windows, door locks, airconditing, and Bluetooh (which my dad and I added).

Great video - very informative. I think what defines car design now isn't rounded v boxy as much as the use of applied decoration, particularly extravagant creases in sheet metal, over-sized grills, and fake air vents. We see these with almost every manufacturer globally.

What's really interesting about modern car design is that we've had new ways of showing off modernity, in particular, with headlights.

From the 60s to the 90s, all cars had more or less the same lighting technology: a halogen bulb in a reflective housing. But starting in the 2000s, you had xenon bulbs, which gave rise to projector headlights. Then you had LEDs, which at first, were just put into projector housings, but now can be integrated in almost any shape the manufacturer desires. And so, it is no longer necessary to completely change the design language of a car for the new model to distinguish itself from the old one. Throw in some new headlamp and tail-light shapes and the car looks different already.

So it makes sense, as you said, that the modern designs are mostly different in details.

What I find really interesting in car design is the return of an old fashion in tail-light. In the 90s, tail-lights tried to create an even "surface" that would light up in red and amber. But in the 2000s, we saw a shift from "hazy" tail lights to "crystaline" tail lights (2002 vs 2003 Honda Civic as an example). Higher end manufacturers wanted to show off individual LEDs in the tail light, because they were a high end feature, but even incandescent tail lights shaped the reflector to create the illusion of multiple light points.

However, in recent cars, I've noticed that some manufacturers use new light diffusers combined with LED lighting to once gain create "hazy" tail lights.

So yeah, design definitely is cyclical.

So car designs are either Kiki or Bouba, and it flips between them each era.

Seriously, fun and informative video dude! Seeing all the vehicular aesthetics is cool.

An additional fact on the radical changes for front end styling during the 1930s was because of Pierce Arrows patent on fender mounted headlights. It was a styling cue for Pierce Arrow from the early teens until the patent expired in 1934. Other automakers did not want to pay a royalty, so they kept the headlights in tradional position of attached to the radiator or used a headlight bar for the fenders.
