The best rhythm guitar player As iconic as his lead playing was, it was his rhythm playing that made the Van Halen sound what it was. The intros. The phrasing. The two and three note chords splashed in. Truly a master of the machine called guitar.

When I saw Van Halen on Eddie's birthday January 1984 at Jackson Municipal Auditorium, they opened with this song. Eddie's guitar cut through the blackness and thick reefer haze, sending a lightning bolt of chills down my spine that I'll never forget. I was 15 years old.

His rhythm playing was always what defined the band for me.

I think all us Gen X’ers had a Van Halen led soundtrack during our formative years. I think I played my Women and Children First cassette until it was blank. What a great time it was back then.

EVH never overdid it on the guitar. Listening to this isolated track, there are some pretty simple riffs/runs, but they fit perfectly. The master of less is more! RIP🎸❤️

He was a great shredder too but that rhythm and phrasing ability laid the groundwork for all those who followed.
He almost always played what fit the song instead of ridiculous self-indulgence that didn’t fit.
