How to Add | Learning Addition for Kids | Helping Kids master Addition | Basic addition with Numbers

--------

How to add? Basic addition with numbers that consist of tens and units is very simple but kids should understand how to handle it correctly to make it easier to be dealt with. One of the mental math strategies used for addition is partitioning.

Teaching kids basic addition and giving them the chance to understand place value could happen through the mental math strategy of partitioning. Partitioning is the strategy that depends on dividing the numbers of the equation to tens and units, sorting the tens together and the units together, and finally coming to the stage of recombining the two numbers together to bring the final answer.

Let's assume that the mathematical equation that the kids will need to solve is 43+25, the first step they will need to take is partitioning both numbers so that 43 becomes 40 and 3, and 25 becomes 20 and 5. The second step is to sort these numbers in order to place the tens together and the units together, so 40+20=60 and 3+5=8. The third and last step is about recombining these final two numbers together to solve the initial equation, so it will be 60+8=68 and this means that 43+25=68.

It is important to talk these three steps with the kids and let them get introduced to the vocabulary and terminology used in math in order to be well aware of all the different words they might get introduced to later on. Stress on these steps: first is partitioning, second is sorting out, and third is recombining.

Since it is referred to and known as mental strategy, it means that at the beginning kids could write down their calculations in order to see what they are doing, but after practicing they should be able to do these different calculations in their heads and know that recording these steps down is just an initial process which they will need to go through at the beginning only.

Practicing is the most important when it comes to learning a new lesson and parents should always help their kids by repeating the tricks, games and lessons in order to give the child the chance to practice them more and thus learn faster and easier. Parents should also never worry because kids are different when it comes to learning a new lesson, some might take more time than others and some might find specific methods more interesting than others and so on, so it all ends up according to the child himself/herself.

This is important because it will teach the child addition and let them know how to add those numbers that consist of tens and units and at the same time it will help children to gain more confidence when they are asked to solve a specific mathematical operation because they will know how they are supposed to handle and solve it.
