F1's weirdest controversy of 2022 has major implications

Forget the Red Bull cost cap scandal, Formula 1 is in the grip of a new controversy - and it’s possibly the strangest of the season.
Alpine is effectively protesting another team’s protest, after a bizarre situation that meant Fernando Alonso was penalised for a mistake made by the FIA’s race control.
F1’s had plenty of disputes this year, but none are quite as peculiar as this.

I have no hate for Haas - this is all the fault of the FIA

Totally reasonable for HAAS to feel unfairly treated. Totally reasonable for Alpine to keep racing without being told to pit. Farcical FIA action to retroactively hit Alonso with a 30-second penalty.

So Fernando without a side mirror is dangerous but Lance with both mirrors is fine?

The fia are at fault. Haas was right to bring up the issue however Alonso should not have been penalised as the fia didn’t do their job.

Hass does have a point honestly. Seems ridiculous that everyone can race with damage but them. Really unfortunate for Alonso since it was am amazing comeback drive!

I really want to know why Perez got away with it. for 1 he had the same problem Magnussen had with a hanging end plate AND he had the end plate fall off in the race. He had the worst of both worlds and got away with it. I really don't understand the FIAs decisions at all

I think this is a great move by HAAS because it puts the FIA under the spot light to try and explain the inconsistencies we constantly see - the only thing which is consistent is that they are inconsistent. What I do not understand is why they dismissed the penalty against Checo as surely the situation was the same in that his car was damaged in a way that led to a frizbie of carbon fibre flying off and they could have meatballed him easily between the damage and the part detaching itself - and the damage was worse than on any of KMag's incidents. Russel I understand as the damage was different and did not involve parts of the wing flapping around but it would seem if Alonso is deemed to have needed a penalty then it should be the same with Checo. The inconsistent applying of flags and rules need to stop as it seems to just be getting worse and worse each year.

Considering in 2019 Japanese GP Leclerc was ordered to pit for his damaged front wing but the not the mirror issue. Leclerc's Mirror came of in 130R and went off the track. The lack of consitencey is maddening.

FIA are even more clownish than I thought.

What FIA did to Alonso is like FIFA saying a referee made a wrong call for a penalty kick and cancels the goal after the match. Ridiculous.

Perez damage to front wing = no flag
Hamilton damage to front wing = no flag
Kmag damage to front wing= instant flag wtf?

I was also confused by Gasly's penalty. Didn't Perez only get a warning in Singapore for being more than 10 car lengths behind and then a 5 sec penalty for the 2nd instance as he'd ignored the warning. Why didn't Gasly get just a warning?

As the wing end plates are getting broken a lot and are large heavy objects it appears wing end plate tethers are required. Tethers are already used in several other locations so not a big delta.

Russell: kills a person
FIA: 5SEC
Fernando: waits for race team to inform him on a penalty
FIA: your career is ended

I think this is an issue that the FIA needs to take very seriously. With the regulation changes meant to have closer racing, a side effect will be more contact, and more damage that could potentially be flagged. I think they also need to add the option of forcing a team to fixed the issue on their next normal stop rather than forcing them to the pits right away. This would be for items that do not look like they would be a danger right away, but could be an issue as the race continues.

I think damage like what Alonso had where a part could dislodge from the car at any moment should absolutely be flagged. If his mirror had come off at the end of his overtake of K-Mag rather than the beginning, it could have ended K-Mag's race. I think the key is not just damage, but also how likely it is to come off the car.

For me the issue is more the difference between a 5 second penalty for wiping out another car at the first corner vs a 30 second one for no other car involved.

Completely understand HAAS here. Nothing against Alpine and Fernando came back like a champ, but rules need to be applied with consistency.

Controversy aside, let's consider the old adage, 'win on Sunday, Sell on Monday.' With how well Alonso's Alpine held together in that crash, people must be flocking to Alpine dealerships to get their hands on their seemingly indestructible cars!

One of the large problems from last year was inconsistency from stewards who rotate from one race to the next, instead of making one set of stewards do all the races, we got rotating race directors which led to further inconsistencies. It's comedic how bad the FIA make it for themselves

I remember watching Perez’ end plate flapping around and saying …how are the not calling him in…after watching them call in Haas all season and Hamilton in Singapore
