It may seem like BR weren't as good as they were made out to be, but the investment and innovation in BR's heyday (the 1970s) really is worlds ahead of the current private scene's commitment to running trains.

After seeing this I have mixed feelings about Amtrak, how my town went from a dozen passenger trains to the regularly late Cardinal, which would be better called the night owl as it arrives at 11 and 3 am ish (east and west bound respectively)

Us in Canada got it super bad. Our passenger routes were privatized, and ever since then the service has gone downhill. On Vancouver Island, the rails will be ripped up because they pumped money into the highway system there. Service sucks on both intercity and commuter trains, and so many old stations have been torn down. I wish we all still had better passenger service.
