This could be a huge benefit for LT1 owners. No one will ever need to spend $500 to replace optispark again for bad sensor. Runs great with optispark unplugged! camaro trans am 0411 411 pcm

Pretty old video but honestly the Optispark isn’t junk, people just forget that you have to maintain it just like a regular hei distributor. It’s actually a very advanced ignition system using optical sensors to get a read on the position of the cam and deciding which cylinders need to be fired and at what time. This helps a lot with timing making it virtually time itself regardless of application as long as the computer will allow it. Once they added the vent system it really eliminated the majority of problems you have. I have the original opti in my trans am at 200k miles. Just change the cap and rotor every year and every 50k miles take the distributor out and clean the optical sensors. Haven’t had any misfiring problems yet and pushing 500hp

Another great video. Your methodical way of figuring this stuff out is awesome. You should go to the next level and do a stock dyno run, then, do the 411 computer conversion and do another dyno run. The complete info for this conversion for both automatics and manuals is something people would gladly pay you for. I know I would. You should be an engineer. Again, excellent tech info, and thank you for sharing your trial and error work with all us LT-1 / LT-4 guys.

Hey great explanations to everything you talk about, your videos are worth watching multiple times, there's a lot of fine detail that slower learners such as myself pick up on which makes me come back for another watch, I can only take in so much info at one time lol. Great job?

This represents American ingenuity although you can blame “OptiSpark” on CARB regulations adopted by the DOT, EPA....
Spark creates ozone on an enclosure. GM’s 2nd design employs a fresh air supply and a metered vacuum leak to evacuate the cap of these gasses.
Now, a crankshaft sensor and Camshaft sensor inputs provide two different signals. The crankshaft provides the PCM only which two pistons are on top dead center. The Camshaft sensor tells the PCM which one of those two pistons are on the power stroke with fuel ready for spark.
Without a Camshaft input, during starting, the PCM is programmed to spark the next cylinder to fire. The backup program in the PCM to provide spark to the next cylinder in the firing order with spark. So, basically, when starting it fires right up or cranks linger until it gets the right one. This results in extended cranking in certain times.
The camshaft sensor also helps the PCM to identify which cylinder is miss-firing in the event of injector malfunction or mechanical issue. This feature will be lost if there is no camshaft signal. Just saying if you have noticed this.

Thanks for sharing. I have a lt1 I've done this too. I am know machining intakes to allow the vortec distributor in back doing away with the opti spark

I own a 96 ta and the front distributor is literally an hour job. hoses, fans, radiator out, 6 bolts on the water pump, 3 bolts on harmonic balancer, 3 lil bolts on the optispark and theres a pin on the back that is easy to line up and bam it's done and the 96 to 97 is vented and sealed against water so no complaints here mines been running strong with a 50 dollar ebay optispark even have a 48k volt accel ignition coil giving it power

This is incredibly interesting. I will be giving this a lot of consideration. Thanks for sharing this great idea!

This is an interesting method. I may have to try it on one of mine in the future. Your Trans Am looks really nice btw.

Man how you figured all this crap up is amazing, lots of variables, i like how you figured out how to put a rear distributor back where it belongs, the optispark is a big pain in the neck, then they decided to put the water pump on top of it, wonder why gm went that route, its like they were confused or something.

Your a genius! Wish I knew this before I did the coil on plug ltcc setup

"Ya know the optispark is kinda junk." Understatement of the year.

I just bought a 96 Roadmaster Wagon with the de-tuned LT-1. How much power could I gain by swapping in the 411 computer?

So if you had say a '95 Caprice Classic with the LT1 5.7L engine, you just pull the computer and replace with the LS 411 computer? This is great

I have a mild cam in my a4 95 firebird all the local guys say to convert it to an ls computer but tell me I need to convert it to COP to do it..

I just wish it was easier to get to. Mine is backfiring like mad in the sub freezing weather. I did spill coolant on it when I had to mess with the radiator. It is my fault. I wonder if I could clean it without taking it out.

Great videos! I know I am late to the game but I am ready. I have a 96 9c1 Caprice with a stroked LT4. Is there any thing extra I have worry about for this conversion work for B bodies?

So you still need the opti then? Because it still needs something to send the spark signal?

It seems like it's a good idea to have both rear disto and the different computer so if it ever starts acting up you could just switch over.

I’ve pulled the trigger and bought the Torquehead system for my 94 z28
