FINEPOINT PLAYLIST
Shubhangi Sharma explains on Finepoint
India’s ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have strengthened significantly in the last decade, led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's efforts. Modi’s 2015 visit, the first by an Indian PM in 34 years, marked a new era for the relationship, which has since expanded rapidly. The UAE’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is now visiting India, continuing his father Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed’s legacy of fostering bilateral relations.
Key developments include the signing of five agreements on nuclear energy, LNG, petroleum and food parks and the inauguration of an IIT campus in Abu Dhabi. The economic ties have also flourished, with trade between the two nations hitting over $85 billion in 2022, thanks to the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Besides business, the relationship spans education, culture and defence, with both nations collaborating on joint military exercises and counter-terrorism efforts.
The UAE has become India’s third-largest trading partner, while Indians form the largest expatriate group in the UAE. The future of India-UAE relations looks promising, built on shared strategic interests, economic growth and strong cultural ties.
