Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s move to extend the tenure of Chief Justice Luke Malaba by 5 years is seen by some as a consolidation of his grip on power. Justice Malaba passed his retirement age of 70 on May 15 this year. Mnangagwa extended Malaba's term of office after a constitutional amendment days before he was set to step down.

The country's High Court has ruled that Malaba’s extension was unlawful.
