Joe Biden was welcomed with rapturous applause at the Democratic national convention in Chicago.

He waited for several minutes for the cheering to die down before he could start speaking. When the applause finally calmed, he said: 'Folks, let me ask you: are you ready to vote for freedom?' The audience shouted 'yes!' in response. Just one month after withdrawing from the presidential race, Biden delivered a reflective and optimistic address, urging the nation to elect Kamala Harris to protect American democracy.
