The Columbus Blue Jackets recently hired one of the NHL's most hated coaches in Mike Babcock. After being hailed as one of hockeys greatest coaches, Babcock's treatment of his players has been a topic of discussion for years. In this video, we break down how his firing marked a change in what the NHL expects from their coaches.

I remember when he was coaching the Wings and at that time, I read a story from an NHL analyst who said that free agents in many cases avoided Detroit because they did not want to play for him. People deserve another chance but not sure there is any cure for being an ahole.

As a leaf fan.. I remember how excited I was for this guy to become coach. Turned out to be another Leaf moment 😂

Babcock didn’t have a communication problem. He had a being a bad human problem. Big difference. He did things for no reason at all other than abusing his position of power. This is a problem with some people in positions of authority where they think they can do anything they want and harm others just to put others down. If you have met people like this, it’s almost like a mental illness but it causes a lot of harm to others. I hope that he has taken a hard look at his behaviour, but what he has to change is a lot deeper than “communication”.

We were so devastated when he left our city’s team to go to Toronto. If the wings were struggling with the greatest coach still coaching, how could they ever get back to championships with a lesser coach was the sentiment. Fast forward a few seasons and we’re re like, “why didn’t we get rid of him sooner?

Columbus is taking a risk that may prove destructive to players and the team. We really ought to expect little from Babcock.

His record earned him a 2nd shot. If it was another coach who hadn’t won anything, I feel like he wouldn’t be back in the league

Mike Sullivan and Paul Maurice both stand firm on the line of being harsh while keeping good relations and being that strong leader. More coaches need to model their style from these fellas. Aint nobody following their hockey dreams want to be coached by people like that one peewee baseball coach i see all over youtube yellin at little kids like he'll murder em if they don't win. Everybody on an NHL roster wants to win and the times where they are treated like they don't, have passed. its time for teams to move passed Babcock

As a long time wing follower here's the thing. Not only was Babcock a shitty human, he was tactically a bad coach. Wings coulda shouda won a lot more during his tenure with the talent they had.

I so wish that the Babcock style of coaching would be history in all sports, NHL, MLB, NFL, NBA, MLS etc. At least Babcock is history now.

Never meeting, playing for, or coaching with Mike Babcock, it's tough to judge him. The numbers don't lie, his teams have been successful and he has coached Stanley Cup winning teams. However, he is one of the very few hockey people that give the vibe of being bigger than the game itself, and that has always rubbed me the wrong way. People can change. Is hockey fun with Mike Babcock? Despite all the work, sweat, blood, and strife a team goes through, it still needs to be fun at the end of the day. Will he keep that element of fun, or will he suck the life out of everyone by being solely a drill sergeant?

Being a life-long Detroit Red Wings fan, I never really disliked Babcock. He won a Stanley Cup in 2008, and came within a win of repeating in 2009. When I heard some of the things that he did: (Mike Modano not playing in his 1, 500 game comes to mind) I really didn't care for him much. He reminds me of another coach in none other than "Iron" Mike Keenan. Someone who is better with seasoned veteran players and not so much with younger ones.

Mike babcock needs to show me he has changed before I trust him in any capacity as a coach, or a person that is around any young player.

The gradual removal of angry yelling hardass coaching is largely thanks to our growing understanding of the importance of mental health, if you ask me. I feel back in the early 2000s and even 2010s, mental health was still a thing most of us didn't think about much.
