My grandmother and many others dyed their legs with gravy browning and drew a line down the back of the legs to look like they were wearing tights/stocking this was during WW2, one thing was cool albeit a bit sad but she even showed me a genuine ww2 ration stamp booklet and if you enjoy history it's a pretty cool thing to see the real thing, my grandma lived a long life she passed away in the 80s at the age of 89 she was the best grandmother anyone could ask for. I miss her

Foot binding is so misogynistic in so many ways. I remember reading about it in middle school. Literally mutilates / breaks your feet so you can't run away or take flight from abuse and misogyny

The 'small teeth thing' shows how very young girls were preferred, as gums recede as we age, making us grow 'long in the tooth'.

One not mentioned from Japan- women use to paint their teeth black as a beauty trend in Japan. As for the tights look, my grandma used gravy to mimic the look during the war time

True facts about corsets.
They only tight laced for parties if they were wealthy. The drawings from the times were generally false advertising, or depicted with padding. Mostly they were actually comfortable used for breast and back support, with the aesthetic as a side note.

The small eyebrow trend STILL has people trying to grow those bad boys back to normal!

The pasty white faces were achieved by using a lead based product. Actually deadly.

i was a teen in the 80's and saw many odd trends over the years but the one that always reminds me of that time is guys wearing parachute pants with a mesh cut off sleeveless shirt combined with high top reboks and sporting a mullet. the girls wore their hair as high as they could with thick make up and either high rise jeans or stirrup pants. i always wondered how they never caught on fire when they smoked. as for myself.... i was a metal head with long hair half way down my back wearing levi's jeans a band tee shirt and a denim vest over a leather jacket that has a band back patch sewn on and work boots (untied of course) or a pair of army boots from the surplus store. looking back.... none of looks cool. lol

The ugliest trends in my lifetime that I've seen was
Underwear sticking out of jeans.
Boxers exposed because some guy's pants are down around his knees.
OR
The girls that wore low rise jeans with thier thongs or G-string sticking out the back. Both just grossed me out.

The "white" skin look was also about showing your wealth and status. You didn't have to work outside in the fields in the sun. The poor "workers" had to work outside in the sun.

A very long time ago, I actually read a fairy tale that said the foot binding started to keep a Mandarin princess from sleepwalking, her long slender feet being blamed for the situation. By binding her feet, she was kept from walking without aid and thus did not wander far afield at night. The Emperor being enchanted by a dancer is a good reason also ... as though there was ever a really good reason ...

The female royalty of the Maya of the Yucatán of Mexico were said to have dangled a small pebble between their babies’ eyes to make them cross-eyed. That, along with filing teeth and filling the holes with precious materials like coral, onyx, and jade, were considered the height of beauty.

The elongated skulls are still a mystery. Some of the skulls that were found definitely showed evidence of cranial binding, but others didn't. Other skulls showed no indication of cranial binding at all. They were formed that way natural, and had no sagittal suture like a normal human skull.

My very, very Victorian Grandmother used to carry on how lucky I was to have such fine translucent skin and what a mark of beauty it was. Nice when you're young and cute but, Gram, I'm older and my skin has gotten so thin that the veins show right through it and around my mouth I now look like I have a five o'clock shadow.

That foot bending and breaking was horrific.

I was in grade school in the 50's, and girls wore dresses, no matter what and if the boys hair was long enough to touch his ears or his shirt collar he was sent home for a haircut. Then we entered the 60's. Long hair and mini skirts were all the rage. Quite a revolution, especially the mini skirts. Some of the schools had staff members measure the length of the skirts (And hair, sometimes) before they were allowed into the school. Blue jeans were also banned in some schools. Ah yes, those were the days, my friend. Those were the days.===

I have a big forehead due to having a condition known as hydrocephalus at birth (I was 2 months premature) and I might have imagined it but my head often felt too heavy for my neck when I was younger, I was always leaning on my hand and putting my head down in school, it’s fine now also foot binding is absolutely horrifying and disgusting

In my first year of college, we read of people in South America doing all types of teeth work to make them hot looking. Your women making their
teeth short is strange as well, no way I could see having that done for no woman.
Now the leg paintings, my mother told us stories of her and other women that did that, for work or USO dances.
Keep up the great work you all are doing. May you all have a wonderful NEW YEAR.
