Prepping: How to Make Hardtack (Pineapple Pizza)

This coronavirus quarantine time feels like it's never-ending! That's why it's important to stay busy and get creative with your hobbies. I decided to exercise my cooking skills and make the ultimate prepping food: hardtack. You'll never have to worry about an expiration date on this food item, that's for sure! In this video, I'll demonstrate how to make the historical hardtack recipe and I'll also share my personal hardtack pineapple pizza recipe! Yum!

Hardtack Recipe from "A Taste for War" by William C. Davis

"Mix 5 cups of flour to 1 cup of water containing a 1/2-tablespoon of salt. Knead into a dough and roll out to 3/8-inch thickness. Cut into approximately 3-inch squares and pierce each with a fork or ice pick several times. Bake in a 400-degree oven for 30 minutes or until slightly brown."

Note: I ended up adding an additional 1/2-1 cup of water and approximately 1 more cup of flour to the mixture because the original dough was too dry for me to form into a ball. There are a lot of recipes for hardtack on the internet with different flour to water ratios. It's a good idea to experiment with the various recipes to see what works best.

Hardtack Pineapple Pizza Recipe
Use your excess hardtack dough, add your toppings (don't forget the pineapple), and bake for 15 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
