Geckium is the perfect tool for anyone who wants to make Firefox look like Google Chrome from back in the day, as far back as 2008! With Geckium, you can bring back the classic, old-school Chrome aesthetic within Firefox without actually changing how Firefox functions. Whether you're feeling nostalgic or just want a fresh (yet retro) browsing experience, Geckium offers a unique way to customize your browser’s appearance. In this video, we dive into how Geckium works, how to install it, and what exactly it changes in Firefox to bring back that early Chrome vibe.

ok WHAT

Talk about unexpected - never knew you of all people would cover this, Michael. Cool regardless, I just... did not expect you to cover Geckium, this is legitimately so out of left field... also I'm a little tired, so I'd probably have a better reaction to this tomorrow.

Anyways, as one of Geckium's 3 developers, thanks for checking it out!
PS: Since I know Angelbruni, Geckium's main developer, will say this: You should seriously remove those spacers surrounding the address bar next time. I am right in remembering you know about Customise Firefox, after all, aren't I? (it's admittedly been a while since we've interacted, so I can't remember for sure - my bad, honestly) ;P
Also PS: The Geckium UserScript ISN'T an alternative way to install Geckium - it's a website-side mod counterpart FOR Geckium (it force-enables the Install buttons on Chrome and Edge's Web Stores for Themes, since Geckium can use Chromium Themes - Geckium is the world's first ever Firefox mod to support Chromium Themes, thought I'd just mention that).
9:40 This is because your *Titlebar Mode* is Automatic (until 68 (58 in Geckium), Windows 10 used native titlebars) - change it to Compact Borders and it WILL do what you thought it was going to do

It don't look right without 10 toolbars or something under the URL bar X) I was fixing my sisters computer around this time and no joke she had like 5 toolbars on her browser. The poor browser barely loaded Google. She told me she would click links on websites to get things and accidently would be clicking ads instead, hence the toolbars. She had no idea how to remove them. The consequences of users having to find software on shady websites rather than package managers.

Also these retro themes for stuff make me appreciate just how huge our resolution is nowadays, I don't remember it looking that small but yeah that's probably what it would look like on modern displays.

I love this UI, it made me switch to Chrome beta back in the days.
But now I'm using Zen.

I hadn't seen that look since the last time I used Windows XP. The machine also dual booted Linux Mint 21, which was its main OS. Sadly the motherboard died soon after making it to Mint 22. It was a great system to read Floppy's from!

If it was a skin to make Firefox look like Chrome from 2024 I could convince my parents to finally switch to Firefox.

Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. It's that simple. This has the same energy to theming your distribution to look like Windows. I mean people get nostalgic, so it makes sense. It's pretty cool project, but one I will never use. :D
I wouldn't mind such a transformation to make my Firefox look like Netscape Navigator.

You dont need 2 Firefox installs. The userChrome customizations are all in the profile, just create a new profile.

about:profiles

Or you dont even need that, just place the chrome folder in your profile folder and toggle it with the about:config setting

Btw "chrome" is a word for the Firefox UI, it was called like that before Google Chrome existed. This is not a custom folder for Geckium

Can someone help me install this? I'm on Win11 Firefox version 133. My Windows has been skinned to look like Windows 7 btw. I don't really understand the process of installing it

Wouldn't exactly call the look of Chrome from 2008 "old school". Old school is Mosaic and IE 3.

Mozilla Foundation just laid off approx 30% of its staff. This is not good.
