A Bus Ride to Remember

I still remember the day vividly—it was the first time I met him. I was just 17, a young college student on my way to S.P. College. It was an ordinary day, and I had boarded a crowded bus, unaware that it would soon become one of the most unforgettable moments of my life.

Back then, I didn’t know much about Kashmiri music. But there was one voice I had heard—haunting, soulful, unforgettable. Afsoos Dunya was the song, and I remembered the cover photo from the old audio cassette that had caught my attention. That voice had already etched itself in my heart.

As the bus rattled along the road, the conductor moved through the aisle, collecting fares. He approached a gentle-looking man seated quietly, and in a rude, dismissive tone, demanded the fare from him—without a shred of respect. Something stirred in me. I couldn’t stay silent. I stopped the conductor and said, "Do you even know who he is?" Without waiting for an answer, I handed over the fare for him.

The conductor, puzzled but obliged, went back to the man and said, “That boy over there paid your fare.”

The man turned to me with kind, curious expression. He smiled and asked gently, “Do you know me?”

“Yes, of course, ” I replied, a bit nervous yet proud. “Not only me, the whole of Kashmir knows you.”

He chuckled softly and said, “But you sound like just a kid. How old are you?”

“I’m 17, ” I replied.

His smile widened. “And tell me, what’s your favourite song of mine?”

Without hesitation, I said, “Afsoos Dunya… and Che Kami Karnai Tawiz Pan.”

At that moment, he reached out, held my hand, and smiled. It was a gesture so warm, so sincere—it left a mark on my soul. That brief encounter, in the cramped space of a bus, felt like a lifetime of recognition and connection.

Even today, I carry that memory like a cherished tune—soft, powerful, and forever unforgettable.

Never forget who you are, a man who forgets his past is like a tree without roots.

As a young Kashmiri, I think that our adults failed to transmit this beautiful tradition of Kashmir; in fact they hate it. Just tell your parents that I want to study the language of my mother, Kashmiri—not medical to hoard money. Be ready to receive humiliation and mockery, not to mention the sarcasm of your uncles, aunties, and neighbors.

Unbeatable singing. Today's orchestra comes nowhere near. Can anyone produce such poetry these days of materiality? No, not at all. When you start appreciating the talent that is embedded in lyrics, music, and voice, you straightway are flown to emptiness, where the mind is completely transcended and you become you- consciousness.

Wahab Khar is describing the life situation through a story of a spruce tree that is growing in the safe environs at a very high altitude. Even there he is not spared; cut down by the cruel axeman and then rolled and cut into logs and finally, it is fashioned into different pieces of furniture by the carpenter. This is exactly what happens to us. Even when we are hidden, we are dragged by life situations, cut into pieces, and then thrown into this cruel world as pieces, to be eaten by the vultures prying on anything that comes their way.
