Sugar never was and isn't technical. What he was good at was spotting a market niche and hammering it with cheap stuff that customers bought.

Yes some of it was cheap tat but those of us who remember the PCs and Word Processors know just how insanely popular they were. His first PC clone was way, way cheaper than anything else. I bought one and it got me through my degree in the late 80s. The word processor was an immense seller as it was also CPM compatible.

Never forgot the Amstrad HiFi which had a crap volume control. One click was whisper quiet and the next click was eardrum bleeding. And they refused a refund citing that that's how it's meant to work.
I never bought another Amstrad device ever again.

Amstrad made some cheap consumer crap (I know, I had one of their hi-fis) but they also truly innovated and changed the tech world immeasurably. Lord Sugar is not wrong about the PCW word processor being a catalyst from typewriter to word processor. I was a teenager when those things were everywhere and my parents still had a typewriter in the back bedroom before it.
