This is called a click track. Usually the program, on an iPad usually, will have a guide (the voice) counting off the parts coming up that are stored in the file. Everybody's in-ears are synchronized with each other to the track. The higher note click is always on 1 and the other notes are on 2, 3, and 4 being in a 4/4 song. Same for a 6/8 song except the lower notes continue to 5 and 6. It keeps everyone tight

Whenever your trying to follow specific timing this is what’s playing for the instrumentalist too if they are listening to a backing track. It can help the lead vocalist keep in time too but most of the time it’s their voice they are hearing.
