problem is ssl only protects the transit of the data.

if the server or client is compromised then ssl will do you no good.
or if the hacker is spoofing the ssl then that gives the client a false sense of security and the hacker still wins

Trouble is, getting an SSL certificate can cost nothing - and scammers can add https:// to their URL just the same as your favourite bank. I learnt this recently when an email purporting to come from Barclays asked me to click a link to download an important file. When I hovered my mouse over the link, I could see it had an SSL certificate. I clicked the link, and the URL did indeed have an https prefix. That website had been registered on GoDaddy that morning! Barclays confirmend that the email wasn't from them. No damage was done, but I guess that this may have been a dry run. https:// does NOT mean the website is safe!!!!
